An inband signaling modem communicates digital data over a voice channel of a wireless telecommunications network. An input receives digital data. An encoder converts the digital data into audio tones that synthesize frequency characteristics of human speech. The digital data is also encoded to prevent voice encoding circuitry in the telecommunications network from corrupting the synthesized audio tones representing the digital data. An output then outputs the synthesized audio tones to a voice channel of a digital wireless telecommunications network.

A system for tracking objects outdoors. Tags (202) attached to objects such as trailers include GPS receivers (203). Tags transmit uncorrected position and satellite data to a base station (205), where differential corrections are applied, providing 2-5 meter accuracy of the position of the tag and object. Tags are on a low duty cycle. When a tag powers on, it receives accurate time and current satellite data from the base station, enabling the tags to acquire the satellite signal quickly and with minimum power consumption. When a tag is out of base station range, the tag periodically calculates and archives its position. The tag may also include Real Time Locating Systems technology, to enable tracking to continue when the tag moves indoors and becomes inacessible to GPS satellite signals.

The present invention relates to a method and a monitoring system, in particular for use in the monitoring of containers (4). Each container has a radio connection to positioning satellites of the GPS type (5), the SatCom type (6) as well as near field communications equipment from which data may be transferred to a data processing unit. Thus, according to the invention several possible radio connections are provided between the individual near filed communications equipment, it being first checked whether a connection can be established to the position satellite, and if this is not possible, it is attempted to establish a radio connection to the communications satellite. If this cannot be done either, then a radio connection is established to another near field communications equipment. The containers can hereby be monitored and tracked currently if for some reason they loose a radio connection. If the containers are placed at particularly difficult places, an embodiment of the invention comprises near field communications equipment which is not placed on any container and which can communicate with the containers and with the satellites.

A tracking system for railcars is configured as a dynamic local area network having a master tracking unit and a plurality of slave tracking units, each tracking unit being affixed to a separate railcar. To improve reliability of communications between railcars, the distance from a master unit to a slave unit is estimated by comparing phase of a transmitted signal with that of the transmitted signal returned by another tracking unit in the network. Optionally, a determination is made as to whether the slave unit is "ahead" of or "behind" the master unit. Communication path loss between the master and slave units due to frequency selective fading may also be determined. A spectrum survey determines quality of the channel as to its capacity for passing data from the slave unit to the master unit.
