摘要: A polarization beam splitter combiner uses a birefringent crystal that is a fraction of the size of conventional crystals used in similar devices. Since the crystal is considerably shorter in length, the beam passing through the crystal can be uncollimated, spreading very little from one end to the other. Launching uncollimated beams through a short small crystal obviates the requirement for lenses at the end face of the crystal having two waveguides coupled thereto. Since lenses are not required the waveguides at the input/output end face can be very closely spaced apart. Conventional lensed devices utilizing a pair of lenses at an input/output end face must be considerably larger in order to accommodate the lenses and resulting collimated beams.

摘要: An optical isolator capable of simultaneously transmitting a plurality (10) of light beams emitted from a plurality of optical fibers (12, 14) in one direction. The optical isolator includes a plurality (10; 70) of optical fibers (12, 14; 72, 74) for transmitting light beams, a pair of collimating lenses (20, 60) for converting the light beams emitted from or entered into the optical fibers into parallel light beams, a pair of symmetric birefringent elements (30, 50), having at least one tapered surface (32, 34; 52, 54), for emitting by polarization the plurality of parallel light beams having passed the collimating lenses (20, 60) and condensing all the light beams traveling in a forward direction onto the optical fibers, respectively, and a Faraday rotator (40), interposed between the birefringent elements (30, 50), for rotating the light beams incident thereto by 45°. A plurality of tapered faces (32, 34; 52, 54) having the same tapered angle (9) are formed on one surface of the birefringent element (30, 50), so that a plurality of light beams can be simultaneously transmitted in one direction.

摘要: An optical circulator having first, second, and third ports. The optical circulator includes a beam splitter and a plurality of Faraday stages. The beam splitter is connected to the first and third ports and separates a first light signal entering the first port into first and second outgoing light signals. The beam splitter also separates a second light signal entering the third port into third and fourth outgoing light signals. The first, second, third, and fourth outgoing light signals are spaced-apart from one another. The first and second outgoing light signals include, respectively, orthogonal polarization components from the first light signal, and the third and fourth outgoing light signals include, respectively, orthogonal polarization components from the second light signal. The Faraday stages, including a first Faraday stage and a last Faraday stage, being arranged in series. The first Faraday stage receives light from the beam splitter, and the last Faraday stage is positioned so as to provide light to the second port. The second port and the walk-off directions and directions of rotation of the Faraday stages are chosen such that light entering the first port exits the second port, light entering the second port exits the third port, and light entering the third port is prevented from exiting the first and second ports.

摘要: An at least 3-port optical circulator has first group of optical components, and a second group of optical components, the rust group being separated from the second group by an optical distance "l". Each group of optical components has a divider and combiner for dividing an input beam into two beams having orthogonal polarizations and for combining two beams having orthogonal polarizations into a single beam. Furthermore, each group has a GRIN lens for at least substantially collimating or focussing input light, ad a polarization rotator between the first divider and combiner and the GRIN lens for making two orthogonal polarization vectors parallel or the two parallel polarization vectors orthogonal to one of or both of the first and second group of optical elements having beam shifting means disposed to shift two beams having a predetermined same polarization. The beam shifting means are of a thickness and orientation so that a beam of light that propagates from a first port sequentially to a second port and from the second port sequentially to a third port are shifted a distance equal to the distance between the optical axes of the first and the third ports.

摘要: An optical device having a function of an optical circulator of which forward losses are uniformly small wihle reverse losses are uniformly great. The optical device applicable to be used as an improved three-port optical circulator has three optical coupling units (30) connected optically to three ports (1,2,3) respectively, a reflecting unit (32) for giving a polarization plane rotation of 90° to an input beam, and a main polarization beam splitter (40) having a polarized-wave separating film (38) for optically connecting the optical coupling units (30) and the reflecting unit (32) through transmission and reflection. Each of the optical coupling units (30) comprises a subsidiary polarization beam splitter (46) and a polarization converter (48). The subsidiary polarization beam splitter (46) couples the relevant port (1,2,3) to first and second polarized beams perpendicular to each other. The polarization converter (48) converts the polarization state of one of the first and second polarized beams in such a manner that the first and second polarized beams are transmitted through or reflected by the polarized-wave separating film (38) in accordance with the directions of the beams.

摘要: A polarization-independent optical isolator having a structure in which polarization dispersion is virtually eliminated by selecting the thickness and optical axis orientations of birefringent crystalline plates used in the isolator is disclosed. The optical isolator of the present invention employs a combination of birefringent crystalline plates wherein the optical axis orientation of at least one birefringent crystalline plate in the optical isolator is different from the optical axis orientation of the remaining birefringent crystalline plates, and the polarization mode dispersion, which is induced when the beam propagates through the birefringent crystalline plate having a different optical axis orientation, is equal to the dispersion rate of the polarization mode dispersion attributable to the remaining birefringent crystalline plates and in a mutually inverse direction.
