Provided is an optical imaging pen configured to detect information encoded on a page with ink which is substantially invisible to the human eye. The pen includes a housing and an ink pen cartridge and a stylus mounted side by side within the housing, the ink cartridge and stylus configured to be brought forward through an open end of the housing by rotation of a pen top rotatably mounted on an end of the housing. The pen includes an electronics chassis mounted inside the housing, said chassis supporting an infrared LED for providing infrared radiation for projection onto the page, an image sensor for receiving reflected radiation from the surface, a radio frequency circuit having a radio frequency (RF) transmitter and receiver, and a controller circuit for controlling operation of the LED, sensor and radio frequency circuit. Also included is a rechargeable battery mounted about, and in contact with, the electronics chassis with an induction coil mounted about the chassis to enable induction recharging of the battery.

An apparatus may be provided for determining a signature from an article in a reading volume of the apparatus. The apparatus can comprise a source operable to generate a coherent beam and a beam directing member operable to direct the coherent beam into the reading volume. The apparatus may also comprise a detector arrangement for collecting signals created by scatter of the coherent beam within the reading volume, wherein different ones of the signals relate to scatter from different parts of the reading volume and a processor operable to determine a signature for an article in the reading volume from the collected signals. Use of such apparatus can be repeated whenever required to test authenticity of the article. The apparatus can utilise a camera to ensure that article alignment within the reading volume is such as to provide for reliable signature generation for comparison purposes.

A method of embedding an optical signature in a document (20) and document produced therefrom. The optical signature is an optica pattern (22) generated from a known value, such as a mathematical, geometric, trigonometric, size, phase, and the like, and the sam value can be generated from examination of a document having the embedded optical pattern (22). The document (20) can be validated, authenticated, or the determination of a valid copy of an original document with the embedded optical signature made through comparison of the known value and the value generated from the optical pattern (22) on the document (20). The optical pattern (22) can also be generated from other identification codes on the document (20).

A banknote acceptor for authenticating a banknote 2, has a sensing station S with detector 18 that produces image signals corresponding to a face the banknote. A processor 24 pre-processes the image signals and compares them with stored reference data corresponding to an acceptable banknote from memory 25 to determining the authenticity of the banknote and its denomination. A display device 29 displays an image 31 corresponding to the banknote under test based on the image signals from the detector 18, to allow the user to perform a visual check that the banknote detected at the sensing station corresponds to the banknote under test presented by the user. Also, the detected denomination of the banknote is displayed on device 32. The user can accept or reject the banknote using buttons 33 and 34, and retrieve images of previously accepted banknotes with button 35.
摘要:
An apparatus for currency discrimination comprises first and second stationary scanheads, disposed on opposite sides of a bill transport path, for scanning respective first and second opposing surfaces of a bill traveling along the bill transport path and for producing respective output signals. The bill travels along the transport path in the direction of a predetermined dimension of the bill. A memory stores master characteristic patterns corresponding to associated predetermined surfaces of a plurality of denominations of genuine bills. Sampling circuitry samples the output signals associated with the respective first and second opposing surfaces of the scanned bill. A signal processor is programmed to determine which one of the first and second opposing surfaces corresponds to the associated predetermined surfaces of the plurality of denominations of genuine bills. The processor then correlates the output signal associated with the one of the first and second opposing surfaces corresponding to the associated predetermined surfaces with the master characteristic patterns to identify the denomination of the scanned bill.
