An information recording medium (12) and an information reproducing apparatus for use therewith for putting information into a system easily and quickly. The information recording medium (12) records, in units of blocks, reproduction data such as voice data, image data and text data as well as reproduction data management information including address information and continuous reproduction information. The address information is built in a layered structure to designate addresses at which the reproduction data are stored. The continuous reproduction information specifies any one of two ways, i. e., continuously or selectively, in which to reproduce the reproduction data. The information reproducing apparatus comprises discriminating means (4, 5, 6) for discriminating the continuous reproduction information in each block, and reproducing means (8, 10) for reproducing the reproduction data in units of blocks continuously or selectively depending on the result of the discrimination by the discriminating means (4, 5, 6).

For each high resolution image-representative data file, an associated low resolution digitized image is stored within a low resolution index image data file. Selected ones or all of the low resolution image-representative data files within the index file may be read out and displayed as corresponding low resolution portions of a montage image to facilitate rapid viewing of the images.

A device for omnidirectional image viewing providing pan-and-tilt orientation, rotation, and magnification within a selected field-of-view for use in any application including inspection, monitoring, surveillance, and target acquisition.. The imaging device (using optical or infrared images) is based on the effect that the image from a wide angle lens, which produces a circular image of an entire field-of-view, can be mathematically corrected using high speed electronic circuitry. More specifically, an incoming image from any image acquisition source is captured in memory of the device, a transformation is performed for the viewing region of interest and viewing direction, and a corrected image is output as a video image signal for viewing, recording, or analysis. Multiple simultaneous images can be output from a single input image. As a result, this device can accomplish the functions of pan, tilt, rotation, and zoom throughout the selected field-of-view without the need for any mechanical mechanisms to move a camera. The preferred embodiment of the image transformation device can provide corrected images at real-time rates compatible with standard video equipment. The device can be controlled by discrete user input, automatic computer scanning, or discrete environmental inputs to select desired output images.

A simple electronic file system includes a copying machine (10) with an optical disc device having a light-receiving unit (130) for converting optical image of a document into digital image data, an image storage unit (135) for storing the digital image data converted by the light-receiving unit, a printer unit (140) for printing the digital image data onto paper, an optical disc unit (150) for recording digital image data page by page onto the optical disc accommodated in an exchangeable optical disc cartridge, and a selection unit (136) which selects whether the digital image data be printed by the printer unit or not, and whether the digital image data be recorded by the optical disc unit or not; and a reproduction-only optical disc device (30) having a selection unit (344) which selects a page to be reproduced from the optical disc accommodated in the optical disc cartridge, optical disc units (332 - 340) for reading digital image data of the selected page from the optical disc, an image storage unit (350) for storing the digital image data read from the optical disc unit, and a flat display unit (312) for displaying the image data stored in the image storage unit. Image data of a document are recorded by the copying machine with optical disc device onto the optical disc page by page, and the image data recorded onto the optical disc are reproduced by the reproduction-only optical disc device page by page. The capacity of the optical disc cartridge is nearly comparable with an ordinary amount of paper file, and the data are retrieved page by page. Therefore, the document in the optical disc can be easily recorded and reproduced. Further, the optical disc cartridge can be preserved just like an ordinary file. The file system therefore can be easily used in offices and in homes.

Pixel information representing an image for display is coded using data compression. The data compression consists in obtaining the pixel information as a first matrix of high resolution pixel values, subtracting from this first matrix a second matrix composed of lower resolution pixel values, produced by low pass filtering the first matrix, to produce a third matrix of difference values, sub-sampling the second matrix to produce a fourth matrix of less density lower resolution pixel values and coding the third and fourth matrices. Complementary decoding consists in restituting the second matrix by interpolation filtering the decoded fourth matrix, and combining the restituted second matrix with the decoded third matrix. Loss of accuracy in the decoding method is reduced by coding and then decoding the fourth matrix during the coding method before it is interpolated to full pixel density to form the restituted second matrix which is subtracted from the first matrix to produce the third matrix of difference values. In this way, any sub-sampling and interpolation errors in the restituted fourth matrix occur in both the coding method and the decoding method and therefore cancel out. Figure 3 illustrates the coding method including these coding and decoding steps.
