An apparatus and a method is disclosed for providing a controlled separation of a structure that has been screened from the screening mask. A dampener pad (20) floats with the mask (12) as the screened structure is being separated from the mask. The mask is held in place by the dampener pad while the structure completely separates from the mask. The dampener pad assembly, then, in a controlled manner, brings the mask back to the original position, and the mask is then ready for the next screening operation.

A pattern (204, 504, 506) is printed with a material, such as a masking coating or ink, on the substrate (202, 502), the pattern (204, 504, 506) being such that, in one embodiment, the desired structures will be formed in the areas where the printed material is not present, i.e., a negative image of thin film structure to be formed is printed. In another embodiment, the pattern (204, 504, 506) is printed with a material that is difficult to strip from the substrate (202, 502), and the desired thin film structures will be formed in the areas where the printed material is present, i.e., a positive image of the thin film structure is printed. The thin film material (206, 508) is deposited on the patterned substrate, and the undesired area is stripped, leaving behind the patterned thin film structure.

Apparatus and methods are provided for separating photographic film strips (12,14), adhered to a splice (18), by restricting movement of the splice (10) and then pulling the film strips longitudinally in opposite directions. According to one feature, the splice adhesive (28) is heated until it softens, preferably with a hot shoe applied against the splice under pressure. According to other features a space is left between the ends of the film strips (12,14) when they are spliced together, and the splice is engaged from both sides while the film strips are pulled apart. Still more specifically, according to another aspect of the invention, a carrier or splice pick-up web is provided for removing the splices from the area and for holding the removed splices in a manner particularly convenient for disposal.

A cathode-ray tube apparatus (CRT) including a panel glass (4) which has been subjected to no external polishing, and an ultraviolet-curing resin layer (11) provided on the panel glass (4) and having a refractive index which differs from that of the panel glass (4) by not more than 0.8 %. The CRT further includes a light-transmitting film (12) provided on the resin layer. Also disclosed is a production method which enables a reduction in the weight of a CRT and an improvement in the explosion-proof performance, which have been demanded with the realization of large-sized CRTs and flat-panel CRTs, and which also makes it possible to produce such CRTs by a simplified process and at a reduced cost. The method also includes the use of a UV-transmissive vacuum container.
