A metal matrix composite (4) constitutes a part of a piston (1). The metal matrix composite (4) is comprised of a matrix comprising a light metal alloy and, incorporated therein, a reinforcing material comprising a metal fiber, wherein the reinforcing material contains Fe and Cr as main components and also contains at least one of Al and Si, the content of Cr being 5 to 30 % and the content of the at least one of Al and Si being 3 to 10 %, and the metal fiber has a diameter of ζ 20 νm to ζ100 νm. The reinforcing material is formed by the molten metal extraction method and has irregularities on its circumferential surface. The solution treatment for the metal matrix composite (4) is carried out in a temperature range of 470 °C to 500 °C for suppressing the formation of an intermetallic compound.

The upper die (3) is closed onto the lower die (2) and the male plug (8) closes the shape and acts as a flow control element for the port (24) that provides a connection to the liquid metal input duct (10).

A molten alloy capable of forming an amorphous alloy is subjected to solidification under a pressure of more than 1 atm. to form an alloy having no defect, and also the cooling rate during the solidification is controlled so as to disperse fine crystals having a mean crystal grain diameter of 1 nm to 50 mu m in a crystal volume percentage of 5 to 40 %, to thereby impart a uniform residual compression stress over the whole resultant amorphous alloy ingot. Further, an amorphous alloy ingot produced by this method can be strengthened by heating the alloy ingot at a specific temperature rising rate and rendering, in a supercooled liquid state before crystallization, at least one of boron, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and fluorine to penetrate from its surface, to thereby precipitate a high melting point compound thereof with an element forming the amorphous alloy within the alloy ingot.

A raw material for a crystal is inserted into the shaping vessel (1) and a crystal melt (5) is formed by setting it in a predetermined atmosphere and heating it. A mechanical force F1 is applied to the crystal melt (5), which is present on the upper surface of the shaper (2), by a pressuring member (4) from above. The crystal melt (5) has nowhere to escape but a gap (3) formed by the shaper( 2), so it is injected into that gap (3) as shown by the arrow. This method of fabricating a shaped crystal is suitable for fabricating a monocrystal or multicrystal semiconductor from a material such as silicon, germanium, or bismuth telluride.

Verfahren und Vorrichtung zum Herstellen von dispersionsverfestigten Kupferformteilen, wobei eine mit maximal 3OO °C überhitzte Kupferschmelze hergestellt wird, die mit Bor und einem oder mehreren boridbildenden Elementen der Gruppen IVA, VA und VIA des Periodensystems und/oder Aluminium derart übersättigt wird, daß sich in der überhitzten Schmelze schlagartig eine homogene, weitgehend stabile Boriddispersion bildet, und eine vorgegeben Menge dieser boridhaltigen Kupferschmelze entweder direkt in einer Preßmatrize hergestellt wird oder dosiert in diese eingebracht wird und unmittelbar nach ihrer Herstellung bzw. Einbringung mit Hilfe eines Stempels vorzugsweise unter Anwendung von Preßdruck geformt und vor Entnahme des fertigen oder endformnahen Kupferformteils zur Erstarrung gebracht wird. Das Verfahren ist rationell und flexibel und es können qualitativ hochwertige Teile bei optimaler Materialausnutzung in leicht automatisierbaren, einfachen Vorrichtungen hergestellt werden.

@ An insert (14), such as a piston ring groove reinforcement insert, is incorporated into the piston by squeeze casting the piston crown-down with the insert (14) being located towards the base of the lower die member (10). This avoids the problems of insert warping and cracking which can arise as a result of differential solidification and contraction during solidification in crown-up squeeze casting. Crown-down squeeze casting also ensures that the skirt (17) of the piston has fully developed squeeze cast properties by avoiding premature solidification of the skirt before squeezing, which can occur in crown-up squeeze casting.
