A fiber preform includes a milled fiber material having a weighted average fiber length of about 0.03 mm to 0.12 mm and/or a percent fiber volume fraction of the fiber preform of about 15% to about 55%. The milled fiber material is at least substantially free of a binder material. A fiber-reinforced MMC includes a milled fiber material having a weighted-average fiber length of about 0.03 mm to 0.12 mm and/or a percent fiber volume fraction of the fiber preform of about 15% to about 55%. The fiber-reinforced MMC further includes a metal infiltrated into the milled fiber material. The milled fiber material is at least substantially free of a binder material. The milled fiber can be substantially uniformly oriented and/or randomly oriented in the fiber preform and/or the fiber-reinforced MMC.

Use of Ca in metal matrix composites (MMC) allows for incorporation of small and large amounts of ceramic (e.g. rutile Ti02) into the metal (Al, or its alloys). Calcium remains principally out of the matrix and is part of a boundary layer system that has advantages for integrity of the MMC. Between 0.005 and 10 wt. % calcium (Ca) may be included, and more than 50 wt. % of rutile has been shown to be integrated. Rutile may therefore be used to reduce melt loss due to calcium from an aluminum or aluminum alloy melt.

The invention relates to a metal matrix ceramic composite and manufacturing method and application thereof. The metal matrix ceramic composite is completely formed by permeating at least part of a matrix metal into an array of ceramic granules by means of squeeze-casting. The volume percentage of the ceramic granules may be adjusted within a range of 10%-80% of the metal matrix ceramic composite according to the usage requirements. The metal matrix ceramic composites can not only retain high performance of anti-penetration, but also have the strong toughness of the metal; in addition, this composite has features of low density, resistance against ordinary mechanical cutting and flame cutting, and inhibition of crack propagation and the like. Therefore, said composite has broad application prospects in the protection of such important security facilities as safes, automatic teller machines and vault gates.
