The invention relates to a device for casting molten metal, notably cast iron, in pig moulds. In a pig casting machine said device comprises an endless conveyor belt (2) for transporting the pig moulds (1) from a casting station (3) to a pig mould stripping station and vice versa. In the casting station (3) each pig mould (1) is filled with molten metal as it passes through the casting device with its mould cavity pointing upwards. The molten metal is fed from a transported container (4) into the mould cavity via a guide element. The invention aims to improve such a device. To this end the guide element is configured as a distributor (6) having a tub-like part (7) for receiving the molten metal from the transported container (4) such that a stored quantity (8) is formed and has a casting part (9) with at least one tubular spout (10). The tub-like receiving part (7) and the casting part (9) are assigned to each other such that they communicate via a lower connecting hole (11) in a shared siphon-like internal separating wall (12).

Adjacent moulds (12) of the portion of moulds are closely contiguous during passage beneath the casting hood (13) whereby passage of protective gas between said adjacent moulds is minimised. The casting hood (13) and the portion of moulds (120) form a substantially gas-tight enclosure above the portion of moulds (12) into which gas can be introduced. The enclosure houses the discharge member of the molten metal supplying device (20).

A casting wheel (10) for use in filling ingot moulds (36) of an ingot mould line has a wheel member (12) comprising a hub (14) and a plurality of spouts (20). The invention is related to a continuous moulding device of building materials comprising two pairs of drive sprockets (22) oppositely positioned at the inlet and the outlet of the device, a pair of chain conveyors (24) wound on said drive sprockets (22) and having a connecting part (24a) on each of their links, a series of bottom plates (26) each of which is connected to opposite connecting parts (24a) of said links, side wall members (27) pivotally connected to the sides of each said bottom plate to form a unit mould transversely, and end pieces (30, 30') connected to each said bottom plate (26) to resiliently contact the ends of each unit mould. According to another aspect of the invention, said unit mould can be formed by side wall members (127) and a bottom member (128), or by a bottom wall (210a) and side walls (210b, 210c) of a moulding conveyor belt (210). The device makes it possible to maintain dimensional tolerances of the moulded products, concrete beams, door frames, or aluminum blocks, within ± 1mm, because, by suitable means, the end pieces and the side walls of each mould are positioned vertical with the bottom plates during moulding and automatically pivoted outward during removing. In addition, articles having a natural wood grain appearance can be produced by providing a separate bottom forming member on the bottom plate, the bottom forming member having on its surface desired wood grains embossed or engraved.

A process for minimizing foam formation on the surface of molten metal which forms a foam during free falling of molten metal, such as molten zinc, into moulds, launders or other containers is disclosed. The process comprises maintaining the molten metal during free falling thereof under an essentially non-oxidizing atmosphere so as to prevent entrainment of sufficient oxygen into the molten metal by the falling stream to form an excessive amount of bubbles having a tenacious oxidized film and which do not collapse when they float to the surface of the molten metal but rather produce undesirable foam on the surface. The process is preferably carried out on a continuous casting machine by providing a cover plate mounted at a predetermined distance above the cover plate and having an aperture therein for casting molten metal. The cover plate extends before and after such aperture and has a predetermined number of gas inlet ports from feeding a non-oxidizing gas through the cover plate to progressively develop a non-oxidizing atmosphere in the container as they approach the aperture in the cover and to maintain such atmosphere in the containers as they pass the aperture.
