The invention relates to a method for generating a regulated direct voltage (UG) from an alternating voltage (UW) using a step-down transformer (S1, D1, D2, C0, L), a step-up transformer (S2, D2, C0, L), an inductance coil (L) and a control device (11) that controls the transformer in a step-down or step-up transformation mode. According to the invention, an inductance coil voltage measuring signal (I) is compared with three limiting values (A, B, C) with the purpose of simplifying said method, wherein A corresponds to zero, B lies between A and C and B and C correspond to the direct voltage (UG). Switching from the step-down to the step-up transformation mode is effected when the increasing voltage measuring signal (I) drops after reaching B and A is not reached again and increases to C instead. Switching from step-down to step-up transformation mode is effected when the decreasing voltage measuring signal (I) increases after reaching A and B is not reached and drops to A instead. In the power supply device for implementing the method, the control device (11) comprises three comparators (15, 16, 17) for comparing the limiting values (A, B, C) with the voltage measuring signal (I) of a voltage measuring device (5), wherein at least B and C are dependent upon regulation deviation (XW).

A direct current or direct voltage power supply (10) operating from a mains AC line (12) is corrected for power factor so that the maximum power can be extracted from the source. The AC line is full-wave rectified (14), filtered (16) and the resulting pulsating direct voltage is applied to a buck/boost switched inductor (22) switched (24) at a frequency higher than the line frequency. The buck/boost switching action is controlled so that the switchover between buck and boost modes occurs when the instantaneous value of the pulsating direct voltage equals the supply output voltage. The inductor current in the buck mode of operation is controlled to have an input voltage-squared characteristic; the inductor current in the boost mode is controlled to have an input voltage-proportional characteristic. The resulting average current makes the AC line current substantially proportional to the AC line voltage, to achieve substantially unity power factor.

A regulated power supply provides a regulated supply voltage at a preselected level under normal operating conditions. When power demands of the circuitry driven by the supply requires a higher voltage, the supply adapts to supply such a higher voltage. Such a supply can be used with automotive electronic circuitry, and can supply voltages up to approximately the voltage available on an automobile battery when such higher power demands occur. The higher supply voltages remain regulated, and return to normal levels when the extra power requirement is removed.
