A hybrid marine power train system is provided that facilitates selective use of one of multiple prime movers for powering and driving a boat. The multiple prime movers can include an internal combustion engine and an electric motor which can itself be part of a motor/generator assembly. The system further includes a power-take-in assembly that can have either an active or passive clutching device for selectively importing power from the prime movers into the transmission. The system is configured so that the second prime mover occupies relatively little space within an engine compartment of the boat, for example when compared to an amount of space occupied by the first prime mover and transmission. Since the second prime mover occupies relatively little space within the engine compartment, the system can be readily retrofitted to existing marine power train systems.

A propulsion arrangement for a marine vessel is disclosed. The propulsion arrangement comprises an engine (12, 14) for propelling the vessel and an electrical machine (26, 28) coupled to the engine. The electrical machine is arranged to supply onboard electrical power for the vessel. A control unit (44) controls the electrical machine such that the electrical machine is selectively operable as a generator or a motor. The control unit and the electrical machine are arranged such that the electrical machine when operating as a motor can supplement the power of the engine while the engine is in operation. In one embodiment, the control unit and the electrical machine are arranged to provide active damping of the engine torque.

A mixed propulsion system for a seagoing vessel such as a liquid natural gas carrier including a gas turbine engine is described. The vessel has at least one electric propulsion drive and a plurality of prime movers of different types each coupled directly to drive an electrical generator. The outputs of the several generators are connected t at least two electricity distribution switchboards to supply the power requirements of the vessel, and each electric propulsion drive is cross-coupled to receive power selectively from either switchboard such that in the event of a single failure in a switchboard or prime mover or both power can be maintained to both propulsion drives.

The invention relates to an energy system (1) which comprises at least one main engine (2) for generating mechanical energy for driving a shaft unit (6) which is coupled to a marine screw propeller (7), a power generation system (12) for generating electrical energy for an electrical network (4) of the ship, at least one auxiliary engine (5), running faster than the main engine (2), for generating mechanical energy for driving the power generation system (12) and an installation (8) for establishing an energy flux (13) between the electrical network (4) and the shaft unit (6) by converting at least a part of the electrical energy supplied by the power generation system (12) to the electrical network (4) to mechanical energy for driving the shaft unit (6) or for converting at least a part of the mechanical energy delivered from the main engine (2) to the shaft unit (6) to electrical energy to be supplied to the electrical network (4). The aim of the invention is to provide an energy system which allows optimum operation, with respect to the most different requirements, with minimum installed engine output. For this purpose, the direction and amount of energy flux (13) is controlled in such a manner as to provide the energy required for driving the marine screw propeller (7) and for the electrical network (4) and the total system consisting of the main engine (2) and the at least one auxiliary engine (5) is operated at a predetermined operating point.
