The invention relates to blade for a stator of a torque converter, comprising a first blade segment which is connected to internal and external peripheral sections of the stator, and a second blade segment which is formed separately from the first blade segment and is connected to the circumferential sections. The invention is characterised in that the edges of the blade segments touch each other, overlap, are offset around the circumference and are at least partially folded, punched and cast. Arrangements of the blade segments can be selected such that performance characteristics of the stator, for example, torque ratio, degree of efficiency and output are modified. The invention is further characterised in that the blade segments are aligned around the circumference, and the stator comprises an alignment element that is arranged in a functional manner such that it controls the alignment around the circumference, for example, in response to the pressure of a liquid on the blades in the stator. The invention is also characterised in that the stator comprises axial halves which are formed separately and are rigidly connected together. The blade segments are connected to corresponding halves.

The present invention generally comprises a modular unit having a stator and a clutch for a torque converter, wherein the modular unit contains a first and a second half for a stator, which first and second half are in each case formed by a first and a second individual part. The blades for the stator are arranged within corresponding rings for the first and the second half. The modular unit also contains a one-way clutch. The first and the second halves have inner peripheral parts which are designed so as to form a part of the clutch. The modular unit contains a disc which is moveable in the axial direction and is connected to a hub. The disc and a peripheral part are arranged functionally in such a way as to form a part of the clutch. According to some aspects, the disc and the peripheral part are arranged so as to latch into one another, and the modular unit contains a movement element which is arranged so as to press the disc against the peripheral part. According to some aspects, the disc and the hub are formed from a single part, or the disc can be moved in the axial direction with respect to the hub.

The container member and covering member are abutted with each other and bonded by a friction stir welding operation. The bonding structure for the container and covering members comprises a bonding portion and a backing member (12). The bonding portion of the container member and the covering member is formed by inserting a friction stir welding tool (7a) into an abutting portion of the container member and the covering member. The backing member is provided for obstructing a plastic flow of materials for the container member and the covering member when the friction stir welding operation is performed. The backing member is disposed adjacent to the bonding portion, at a side of the abutting portion that is opposite to an inserting side of the friction stir welding tool.
