Novel nickel and/or cobalt plated sponge based catalysts are disclosed. The catalyst have an activity and/or selectivity comparable to conventional nickel and/or cobalt sponge catalysts, e.g., Raney® nickel or Raney® cobalt catalysts, but require a reduced content of nickel and/or cobalt. Catalysts in accordance with the invention comprise nickel and/or cobalt coated on at least a portion of the surface of a sponge support. Preferably, the sponge support comprises at least one metal other than or different from the metal(s) contained in the coating. The method of preparing the plated catalysts, and the method of using the catalysts in the preparation of organic compounds are also disclosed.

This invention relates to enhancing the compressive strength of cements after 1, 3, 7 and 28 days following hydration and to improving porosity and finished surfaces of the hardened cements and concretes made therefrom. The improved cements are prepared using certain hydroxylamine additives in amounts of up to 0.1 % which preferably are added during grinding of the cement in which case the amines further act as grinding aids.

The present invention relates to a supported catalyst system. The supported catalyst of the present invention comprises an inorganic support having attached to at least one surface thereof non-acidic, hydrophillic, hydroxyl-containing organic R10 groups having no or substantially no surface charge in solution, and at least one linker capable of binding a catalytic species, e.g. an enzyme or an organometallic molecule, wherein the linker is attached to a catalytic species. The R10 groups preferably are selected from the group consisting of -CH2OH, -CH(OH)2, -CH(OH)CH3, -CH2CH2OH, -CH(OH)2CH3, -CH2CH(OH)2, -CH(OH)CH2(OH) and mixtures thereof. The presence of the R10 groups on the support surface prevents or reduces non-specific binding of the catalytic species with the support surface by minimizing hydrophobic interactions and providing no or substantially no surface charge in the region of the support having catalytic species attached thereto. Simultaneously, the linker binds the catalytic species to the surface of the support in a manner which permits the catalytic species to be freely available for catalytic activity. Methods of catalyzing a reaction using the supported catalyst system of the invention are also disclosed.

Processes for preparing a composition comprising (i) an acidic metal oxide containing substantially no zeolite, (ii) an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, and mixtures thereof, and (iii) an oxygen storage component are disclosed. Preferably, the process comprise forming a single slurry of components (i) - (iii), spray drying and calcining to obtain metal oxide particles comprising components (i)- (iii). Preferably, the slurry comprise a base peptized acidic metal oxide containing slurry wherein the component (ii) is provided in the slurry as a metal of the base. Compositions prepared are impregnated with a noble metal to provide compositions useful to reduce gas phase reduced nitrogen species and NOX in an effluent off gas of a fluid catalytic cracking regenerator.

Reduced emissions of gas phase reduced nitrogen species in the off gas of an FCC regenerator operated in a partial or incomplete mode of combustion is achieved by contacting the off gas with an oxidative catalyst/additive composition having the ability to reduce gas phase nitrogen species to molecular nitrogen. Fluidizable particles of the oxidative catalyst/additives are circulated throughout the partial or incomplete burn FCC unit along with the FCC catalyst inventory. The flue gas having a reduced content of gas phase reduced nitrogen species and NO x is passed to a downstream CO boiler, preferably a low NO.x CO boiler. In the CO boiler, as CO is oxidized to C0 2, a reduced amount of gas phase reduced nitrogen species is oxidized to NO x, thereby providing an increase in the overall reduction of NO x, emitted into the environment.
