A polymeric emulsion comprising a (i) polymer, (ii) water, and (iii) a surfactant is useful as a binder for a water-based varnish that is resistant ot water, 50 % ethanol, and alkali. The polymer comprises about 20 to about 40 weight percent of a soft monomer whose homopolymer has a Tg of less than about -20 °C and about 60 to about 80 weight percent of a mixture of hard monomers each of whose homopolymer has a Tg of greater than about 30 °C. As part of the hard monomer component of the polymer, the polymer comprises about 5 to about 25 weight percent acrylonitrile and about 1 to about 5 weight percent of an olefinic carboxylic acid. Typically, the polymer comprises less than about 1 weight percent surfactant and has a calculated Tg of about 25° to about 60 °C, an actual Tg of about 30° to about 70 °C, and an average particle size of less than about 250 nm. The emulsion generally comprises at least about 40 weight percent solids and has a surface tension of at least about 45 dynes/cm.

An aqueous composition is described. The composition comprises a film-forming latex polymer having anionic character ; a water-soluble or water-dispersible polymer formed from at least about 20% by weight monomer containing amine functional groups ; and a volatile base in an amount effective to raise the pH of the composition to a point high enough where essentially all of the amine functional groups are in a nonionic state ; and optionally a water-soluble or water-dispersible multivalent metal. The composition provides an aqueous, quick-set noncementitious composition which is easily applied, develops early cohesive strength and leaves no waste under all curing conditions. The invention is particularly useful as an adhesive used in exterior insulating and finishing systems. The composition also provides an aqueous, exterior, quick-set coating composition having early washout resistance and dirt pick-up resistance. The invention is also particularly useful as a binder used in a traffic paint and as a base coat and/or top coat in exterior insulation finishing systems.

A paint composition comprising cationic latex polymeric binder, pigment and selective cationic pigment dispersant is disclosed. The paint compositions, which demonstrate the advantages of a water-based system, also exhibit excellent stain blocking, corrosion resistance, water sensitivity resistance and adhesion to wood and alkyd surfaces which are competitive in performance with conventional solvent based alkyd primers.

The amphiphilic copolymers are formed from a predominant amount of at least one hydrophobic monomer and a minor amount of at least one copolymerizable hydrophilic monomer. The process is particularly useful as a one step substitute for conventional retanning and fatliquoring treatment steps.

By addition of methacrylate/unsaturated acid and/or vinyl amide copolymers, poly(vinyl alcohol) can be melt-processed and co-extruded with structural polymers like poly(ethylene terephthalate) to form multilayer films and objects with good adhesion between the components and good barrier properties. The films and objects can be separated and re-used by dissolution in water of the poly(vinyl alcohol)/methacrylate polymer blends and recovery of the structural polymer.

Core and shell polymeric particles are described that have microvoids in the core and one or more channels connecting the microvoids to the exterior of the particle. These particles, or LCAPs are produced by forming a core of polymeric acid, encasing the core in a shell polymer permeable to base, and then neutralizing the core such that the core swells, causing the shell to "explode" in a controlled fashion. This controlled explosion causes channels to form in the shell. These particles can be used as control release devices for target compounds, to impart reinforcing properties to acrylic films, as an opacifying agent in coating compositions, and as a supplement or replacement of part or all of the pigmentary material or extenders that would otherwise be used in such coating compositions.
