摘要： An optical spectrometer uses a tapered Fabry-Perot type linear variable optical filter in conjunction with an optical detector array. The filter can be a long-pass, short-pass, or narrow bandpass filter. The stability of the variable optical filter allows high resolution, depending on the number and spacing of the detectors used. In a further embodiment, signal-processing techniques are used to enhance the resolution of the spectrometer beyond the measured response.

The shroud may be selectively engageable with the cam member and followers, allowing the drive shaft to be removed through the shroud. A fluid circulation arrangement (31), (13) allows air to be injected into loose drilling substrate, so assisting removal of drill cuttings from the boring apparatus. Also described is a drill string incorporating a similar arrangement, allowing the drill string to be reciprocated within a bore. The drill string may further include casing sections, which may have intumescent coatings to allow the sections to be fixed in a wellbore.

摘要： Apparatus (10) for generating an ionised gas plasma flame for use in medicine, particularly for cauterisation, is described. The apparatus (10) has an electrical power source (12) providing an alternating voltage at a fixed frequency and a resonant circuit (16, 26) resonant at the fixed frequency connected to the electrical power source (12). A single insulated electrical conductor (30) is connected to the output (18) of the reactive circuit (16) and terminates at a nozzle (36). Conduit means (32) surrounds the electrical conductor (30) along its length and defines a gas-flow channel for supplying substantially inert gas to the nozzle (36), where the gas-flow emerges as a plasma ionised by the alternating voltage. The reactive circuit (16) produces voltage magnification to ensure initiation of the plasma even though the power source voltage is low.
