An apparatus for sorting coins comprises: a coin entry path (1); a sensor for sensing the denomination of a coin (14); a memory for storing information about the denomination and/or location of a coin; a carriage (2) having a plurality of storage compartments (3, 4) for carrying one or more coins; a plurality of coin exit paths (5, 6, 7); a moveable coin retaining means (8) defining an opening (9) and constituting one wall of the carriage; drive means for moving the coin retaining means and the carriage; and control means for controlling the apparatus such that the said opening is translationally moveable into a given coin exit path, thereby allowing a given coin to travel from a compartment along the given coin exit path in use. The carriage preferably comprises a carousel rotatable about a horizontal axis. This arrangement provides a more compact apparatus which can take up less height.

A single mode resonant cavity is adapted to absorb energy via a single excitation mode in a plurality of overlapping absorption bands having different respective resonant frequencies, thereby increasing the resonant bandwidth of the cavity. The high Q-factor cavity may form part of a microwave powered catalytic converter for exhaust gas, and has the advantage that as the cavity warms up and physically expands the coupling efficiency between the cavity and a relatively narrow waveband microwave source remains good.

A liquid crystal device of the kind in which individually addressable regions are settable to different optical states in response to drive waveforms is described. The waveforms are used to cause the material in different regions to remain set in its existing optical state or to change to another state in dependence upon data to be input to the device, and they are pulse-like in nature and of predetermined amplitude and duration. The operating speed of the device in response to said waveform is improved by causing the profile of the waveforms to depart from the usual squared profile. In one example the waveforms are caused to have substantially triangular leading and/or trailing edges and the profile causing the material to remain set in its existing optical state differs from that causing the material to change into another optical state.

In order to facilitate diffusive transfer of an entity such as a solute between immiscible fluids and subsequent separation of the fluids without mixing, method and apparatus are disclosed having first and second fluid flow paths (11, 12) carrying first and second immiscible fluids, the flow paths communicating with one another in an interface region (16) in which the fluids contact one another and a stable open interface is formed. Diffusive transfer takes place across the interface, and subsequently the fluids flow away from the interface without mixing. The width of the flow paths in the interface region measured normal to the interface lies between 10 and 500 micrometres.

The DPP includes a client DPP being configured to manage the connectivity for the mobility client of the handset. The client DPP receives a plurality of client connectivity requests from a plurality of application clients. The server DPP is configured to manage the connectivity for the mobility server. The server DPP receives a plurality of server connectivity requests from a plurality of application servers. The client DPP and the server DPP are configured to interact with one another to establish a secure channel.
