The detector heads (10a, 10b) include septa (36) for absorbing radiation having a relatively large axial angle. The septa, however, cause the sensitivity of the detectors (10a, 10b) to vary as a function of axial position along their face. The relative positions of the detectors (10a, 10b) and the patient are varied so as to reduce septal artifacts. In particular, artifacts arising from second and fourth harmonics may be reduced.

A list mode processor (22) generates a list of coincidence events. A rebinning processor (24) rebins the events, and a weight processor (26) weights each coincidence event based on the energy of the detected gamma rays.

A peripheral electrical conductor (62) is divided into four symmetric segments by capacitors (76) , (78) , (80) , (82) . A pair of crossing conductors (64, 66) are connected between 90° offset diagonally opposite portions of the peripheral loop (62) . The crossing conductors include capacitors (68, 70) and are not connected but could include capacitors (68, 70, 86, 88) and be connected at their mid-points. With this configuration, the coil supports orthogonal modes within the plane of the coil and, additionally, a third orthogonal mode (84) perpendicular to the plane of the coil. To image an extended region, a plurality of coils may be overlapped to minimise mutual inductance relative to a first mode. An adjustable capacitor may be connected across one of the coils to adjust mutual inductance relative to the second mode. A pair of half wavelength conductors may be connected diagonally across the coils and be interconnected by an adjustable capacitor for adjusting the third mode.

The video is decoded using waveforms derived from a memory which records the output of the sensor when imaged on, for example, primary colours such as red and blue, producing trains of pulses which identify the spatial regions of each line corresponding to the spatial areas of the pattem on the sensor produced by the colour filters F 3 , F 4 , in order that actual scenes can be decoded using the stored waveforms, for example using sample and hold devices. A colour interference signal is generated in matrix addition circuitry 10 to produce a luminance signal which has stripe visibility removed from it, permitting high resolution video signals to be obtained.

A position signaling is usable in connection with an image guided surgery system. A plurality of infrared emitters are mounted on a reference object. The reference object is in turn attached to the rocker arm of a head clamp. The head clamp includes a frame and a first head engaging pin secured to one side of the frame. The rocker arm includes two head engaging pins and is movable in relation to the frame. The image guided surgery system uses the signals provided by the infrared emitters to determine and account for movement of the patient's head.
