A single crystal diamond cutting tool capable of increasing the accuracy of a machined surface by improving the discharging property of chips to reduce cutting resistance and enabling an increase in life by less causing the wear-out and micro chipping of a cutting edge when a crystal material and a hard and brittle material are machined by a ultraprecision method. A tip (2) having a round-shaped ridge of the cutting edge is fitted to the tip of the tool. At least the portion of the ridge of the cutting edge acting as the cutting edge (5) is formed with a specified radius since a first conical surface forming a face (3) is intersected with a second conical surface forming a flank (4). The roundness of the ridge of the cutting edge is less than 100 nm in radius, the width of the first conical surface is 1 to 5 μm, and a chip escape surface (6) in a roughly vertical direction to a cutting direction is formed at the portion of the first conical surface on the opposite side of the ridge line of the cutting edge. A crossing part between the first conical surface and the chip escape surface is formed in a round face, and its radius is 0.1 to 1.0 μm. The face of the first conical surface is negative 15 to 50°.

The diamond cutting tool (36B) has a precise contact point and is shaped with a waviness under about 0.5 micrometers effective to cut a surface profile free of visible tool marks. As cut, the variations of contour (42) and the surface roughness are both under about 0.5 micrometers, and preferably under about 0.2 micrometers or less. Upon implantation, the super finished surface generates wear particles at an asymptotically low or residual level during wear-in which may enhance wear characteristics and reduce local reaction or systemic rejection effects. The component (16,16') is preferably formed by a strong hard polymer, such as UHMWPE, and may be a cup (16'), liner, stem, head, tray (16), insert shell or other wear surface element of an implantable joint assembly.
