Method and apparatus for controlling a vent gap in a mold for an injection molding machine are provided, and include an active material insert configured to be regulate the degree of opening of the vent gap. The active material insert is configured to be actuated in response to signals from a controller, so as to selectively block the opening of the vent gap during the molding process. Wiring structure is coupled to the active material insert, and is configured to carry the actuation signals. Melt flow sensors may also be provided to aid in regulating the vent gap, and may be connected to the controller in order to provide real-time closed loop control over the operation of the vent gap. Preferably, the methods and apparatus are used as part of a system for controlling the flow of melt within a mold cavity.

Rather than developing full closure tonnage for a substantial portion of the duration of an injection cycle, closed loop control of the clamp pressure (such as through control of hydraulic pistons) permits clamp pressure to balance exactly, but preferably slightly exceed, the instantaneous injection pressure. A first approach mimics the injection pressure profile with time, whereby applied tonnage is varied with time according to sensed pressure measurements. A second approach looks to pre-stored or historically accumulated injection pressure information and, instead of varying the tonnage, applies a constant tonnage reflecting the maximum recorded or most likely injection pressure to be experienced in the mold (as recorded stored in a look-up table associated with the particular mold configuration). A machine controller (80, 82) causes the application of applied tonnage through the platen (16, 17) and tie-bars (19, 20) of an injection molding machine (10). Pressure sensors (66-74) located either on a mold surface (50), relative to stack components (58-64) and/or relative to a force closure path of permit a microprocessor (82) to control applied clamp closure tonnage. In this way, the system consumes less power and component wear is reduced.

Advantageously, the indicating member is retained in an indicating position by a press fit between the indicating member and fitting body. A force measuring device (D) is used for determining the force applied on the first (100) and/or second (200) element by the actuation of the injection moulding machine produced by the relative displacement thereof between the first (100) and second (200) elements. A hydraulic chamber whose size is modifiable during the relative displacement associated with a change in pressure of a fluid medium in said hydraulic chamber is formed between the first (100) and second (200) elements, wherein said change in pressure forms an input signal for adjusting the force or pressure and a pressure-relief valve (30) is used for bypassing the hydraulic medium to a hydraulic medium container (35), when the predetermined or predeterminable presser is exceeded in the hydraulic chamber (10), thereby making it possible to obtain a device and method for detecting a force on an injection moulding machine which makes it possible to determine said force in a favourable alternative manner and simultaneously ensure an overload protection.

A method for the automated optimization of an injection molding machine set-up process, the machine for manufacturing injection molded parts and including an injection screw and a configurable injection velocity, the screw having a displacement, comprising the steps of (1) manufacturing one or more parts with the machine, (2) defining as a first pressure the end of velocity control phase pressure and as a second pressure the holding time pressure, (3) defining a linear relationship between packing/holding pressure and time consistent with the first pressure and the second pressure, between the first pressure and the second pressure, (4) defining the packing time as a time of maximum difference between measured melt pressure and the linear relationship, or as the switchover point if measured melt pressure increases after the switchover point, (5) determining a first screw displacement being the minimum displacement of the screw before the packing time within a packing/holding phase and a second screw displacement being the displacement of the screw at the packing time, and (6) calculating the kickback from the difference between the first and second screw displacements, thereby allowing a determination of the kickback from measurements of the screw displacement at packing time.
