A color photographing device is equipped with a light-receiving section having a red pixel selectively receiving red light and outputting a red pixel signal and a green pixel selectively receiving green light and outputting a green pixel signal. The color photographing device is further equipped with an optical filter disposed on the side with a light-receiving surface of the light-receiving section. The optical filter substantially equalizes the signal level of the red pixel signal and the signal level of the green pixel signal when achromatic color illuminated by a solar light source in the daytime is photographed. Therefore, a white balance gain Wr at about 5000K can be lowered as compared with a conventional color photographing device. Accordingly, reduction of color noises and enhancement of gradation can be expected.

A solid-state image pickup apparatus, comprising: an XY address type solid-state image pickup element (11) of a MOS type in which pixels are arranged in a matrix and color filters having a predetermined color coding are formed for the respective pixels, driving means (14) adapted to selectively read out the solid-state image pickup element (11) in an all-pixel read mode or in a thinning-out read mode according to a mode selection signal, in a sequence corresponding to said color coding in both read modes, and frequency changing means (12) adapted to decrease an inputted clock frequency when thinning-out read mode is specified for the solid-state image pickup element (11), wherein said driving means operates on the basis of the clock frequency changed and applied by said frequency changing means (12) and said clock frequency is decreased in said thinning out read mode so that the frame rate is constant even when the read mode is changed. In one embodiment, the transformation from the original mosaic-patterned pixels into the new four-channel color space can be made reversible in integer arithmetic. That allows for the implementation of efficient lossless image compression systems for mosaiced (e.g., raw, or raw Charged Couple Device (CCD)) images.
