An asphalt paving material comprises an asphalt binder present in an amount of from about 3 to about 8 weight percent of the asphalt paving material. The asphalt binder comprises base asphalt and oxidized polyolefin that is present in an amount of from about 0.25 to about 10 weight percent of the base asphalt. Aggregate is present in an amount of about 92 to about 97 weight percent of the asphalt paving material. The oxidized polyolefin effectively adheres the asphalt binder to the aggregate so as to resist stripping of the asphalt binder from the aggregate caused by moisture.

The composite particles include a core, a hydratable clay mineral layer, an optional protective coating, and a reinforcing fiber. The fiber may be present in any or all of several locations: adhered to the core, dispersed in the hydratable layer or in the protective coating. Upon hydration, the hydratable clay mineral layer swells and forms a matrix that cohesively holds the fibers and the core in a fiber-reinforced barrier matrix composition.

A water redispersible polymer powder is produced by drying an aqueous mixture of a thermosettable epoxy resin having a glass transition temperature (Tg) of less than 50 °C, a colloidal stabilizer capable of dispersing the epoxy resin at a temperature above the Tg of the epoxy resin, preferably a polyvinyl alcohol, in an amount of the colloidal stabilizer of at least 2% by weight, and an interfacial crosslinking agent, such as a water soluble amino acid or a water soluble polyfunctional acid, such as polyacrylic acid, in an amount of at least 0.1% by weight, each based upon the weight of the thermosettable epoxy resin. The RDP may optionally include a hardener or curing agent, and may be hardened, cured, or crosslinked by cement ingredients when admixed with water. The water redispersible polymer powder exhibits unexpectedly superior redispersibility and good stability in cementitious formulations.

The emulsion comprises water, an inorganic cement, a surfactant, a water-immiscible fluid, and one or more particulate materials that swell when contacted by a water-immiscible fluid. The water-immiscible fluid is the internal phase of the emulsion, and is isolated from the swellable particulate material until the cement system sets.
