The present invention provides a water redispersible polymer powder (RDP) for use in the preparation of non-cementitious exterior finishing compositions such as textured paint formulations. Also provided are non-cementitious exterior finishing compositions comprising such RDPs and a method of coating a surface with such a finishing composition. When the RDP of the invention is incorporated into an exterior finishing composition such as a topcoat formulation of an external insulation finishing system (EIFS), the resultant composition provides improved dirt pickup resistance without a loss in wet abrasion resistance over conventional textured paint formulations comprising acrylic latex powders and, preferably, acrylic latexes.

The premixed composition includes a latex resin including an acrylic-based polymer, a silicone emulsion, one or more amine compounds, and a silane, and optionally various fillers, pigments, and adjuvants. These components in the proper proportions form a stable viscous suspension that can be floated into tile joints, and cleaned from an adjacent tile surface. The composition rapidly cures to form a hard mass that is resistant to abrasion, in both dry and wet conditions, is color consistent, and is resistant to staining.

A water redispersible polymer powder is produced by drying an aqueous mixture of a low carboxylation, low Tg, large average particle size water insoluble film-forming polymer latex or emulsion and a colloidal stabilizer. The latex polymer may have an average particle size of 2000Å to 5,000Å, and an amount of carboxylation of 0.1% to 2.75% by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, salts or mixtures thereof, based upon the weight of the polymer. Dispersions containing the polymer and a polyvinyl alcohol as a colloidal stabilizer exhibit an unexpectedly low viscosity which facilitates spray drying and permits use of high solids content dispersions with low pressure spray drying to increase production efficiency. Cement compositions such as mortars, which contain the redispersible polymer powder exhibit unexpectedly lower rates of viscosity buildup for better workability or troweling, faster set time, and superior heat flow characteristics.

The present invention provides a coating composition, a method of coating a substrate, and a coated substrate, (e.g., a coated cemented fiberboard article). In preferred embodiments the coating composition includes one or more latex polymers and an aliphatic epoxy resin system. The coating composition can include one or more coating compositions that may be applied in one or more layers. A coated article comprising a cement fiberboard substrate and a coating system applied to the substrate is also provided. The article includes a first coating system applied to the substrate, wherein the first coating system includes an aliphatic epoxy resin system having an aqueous dispersion of polymer particles, optionally a silicate additive, and optionally one or more olefinic compounds and initiator for same. The first coating system preferably includes one or more coating compositions that may be applied in one or more layers. In a preferred embodiment, the first coating system is applied to all the surfaces of the substrate (e.g., the front side, back side and edges of a board). The coated substrate may then be coated with other optional coatings, e.g., decorative or protective topcoats.
