A sewing machine for use with a template capable of holding together two or more layers of fabric that are to be stitched together, the template having a groove shaped according to the required stitching profile and engageable with a guide member projecting upwardly from a baseplate of the sewing machine, the groove being open-ended at its start location and the guide member having a hole through which a needle mounted on the sewing machine passes to effect a stitching action. The machine includes a drive wheel having a periphery capable of engaging a drive edge of the template, means for rotating the drive wheel to effect movement of the template relative to the guide member to drive the template so that the groove moves along the guide member, a probe lying to the feed side of the drive wheel and biased generally towards the guide member, first sensor means operable by movement of the probe against the bias in response to correct initial positioning of the template with the open end of the groove engaged over the guide member, means responsive to the first sensor means to control the drive means so as to move the template into a start position, second sensor means mounted on the sewing machine head and responsive to indicator means on the template to produce a signal sequence from the first sensor means, and control means responsive to the signal sequence to control commencement of stitching and drive of the template from the start position around the desired stitching profile.

A method and apparatus for the automated assembly of sleeves onto the body of the garment. In the present invention, the garment body (120) is placed on a first fixture (30) resembling a mannequin. The sleeves (130) are placed inside facing out on a second conical fixture (94). Automatically, each sleeve (130) is positioned and sewn onto the garment body (120) and the finished garment is removed from the first fixture (30). Through the use of sensors (106), each sleeve (130) is precisely and consistently sewn to the garment body (120). The result is a high quality garment produced at a lower cost.

A workpiece is supported by work support means (40; 40'; 40''; 44'; 142, 144) for movement in a first direction by co-operating workpiece clamping and feeding means (46; 142, 144), both said means being supported on a carriage (16) for movement in a second direction normal to the first to move a workpiece relative to a sewing machine head. Both of said means are arranged on both sides of an elongated aperture (42) extending in the second direction in alignment with a needle penetration point (N). Stepping motors (24; 60) are provided for moving the carriage (16) and operating the workpiece clamping and feeding means (46; 142, 144) under programmed control. A camera (70) is also provided aligned with the aperture (42), for detecting the peripheral outline of a workpiece fed therebeneath. Computer means is effective, in response to the detected outline, to identify the workpiece type and its orientation and location on the workpiece support means and accesses an appropriate stitch pattern data file and modifies the data to take account of the workpiece orientation and location. The workpiece is then sewn according to the thus modified data.

Sheet material (30) is cut into rectangular segments (35). The segments are then moved in sequence parallel to their cut edges (26) rapidly away from the cutting station (34) into a slower operating first sewing station (40) where elastic bands (20, 21) are sewn to the cut head and foot edge portions (26, 27) of the segments. The rapidly moving trailing portion of each segment (35) of sheet material is temporarily accumulated at the accumulation station (39) and progressively fed at a lower rate from the accumulation station to the first sewing station (40). The head and foot edge portions (26, 27) of each segment are folded into overlying relationship with respect to the main body portion by passing the main body portion through a U-shaped turn (49) and at the same time passing the head and foot edge portions through a pair of reverse 90 degree turns (50 and 53). Sewing machines (164, 165) are moved inwardly and then outwardly across the folded edge portions of the segment, thus forming the sewn line of chain stitching (25) diagonally across the corners of the bedsheet (10).

An embroidery sewing machine with such a structure that at least one of driving mechanisms required for embroidery sewing is provided with a driving source independant of the other driving mechanisms and a control device is provided so as to control said one driving source and those of the other driving mechanisms for synchronous operation thereof. With this structure, the driving mechanism having the independent driving source can structurally be simplified thanks to the reduced number of interlocking mechanisms and thus vibration and noise can be reduced. Further, a timing at which to operate the driving mechanism having the independant driving source can freely be set by a signal from said control device according to an embroidery pattern.
