摘要: A shoe bottom roughing machine comprises a shoe support (10) and tool supporting means (12) including a tool support member (50) between which and the shoe support relative movement is effected lengthwise, widthwise and heightwise of the bottom of a shoe supported by the shoe support. The tool support member (50) supports a single roughing tool (698) in the form of a rotary radial wire brush and the brush is mounted for swivelling movement about a verrtical axis. The various motors (34, 66, 84, 148) for effecting these movements are n.c. motors and a computer control, using programmed instructions, is used for determining the path of the tool along the shoe bottom. For supporting the tool support member (50) for its various movements, a double parallel linkage arrangement (44, 46, 50; 42, 46, 50, 58) is provided which is effective to maintain the tool in its heightwise orientation in relation to the shoe bottom while providing lightness and rigidity for the tool mounting. For effecting rotation of the brush, a single drive belt (122) is provided, driven by a motor (110) which itself is movable to maintain the tension in the belt during widthwise and heightwise movement of the tool support member (50) relative to the shoe support (10).

摘要: An absorbent material suitable for use as a medical or hygienic absorbent and comprises a non-woven fibre sheet having dense surface layers (10) and between these layers a less dense region where most of the fibres extend in the plane of the sheet. Transversely extending fibres (16) help to bind the material, the fibres also being bonded to some extent by a hot melt bonding material, e.g. core/sheath-type bi-component fibres. The material is made by forming a blend of fibres, including a minor weight of hot melt fibres, by cross-lapping a plurality of layers (14) to form a web, subjecting the web to needling at low punch density with penetration through the web, thereafter subjecting surface regions (10) of the web to higher punch density needling to form the dense surface layer (10) at each face from the web. The web is then heated, e.g. by high temperature air, to soften the hot melt material and to cause it to bond adjacent fibres while retaining its fibrous form and without significant shrinkage of the web as a whole.

摘要: A method of and apparatus for reducing the thickness of (or skiving) regions of sheet material workpieces, e.g. shoe upper components, involves feeding a workpiece (14) to a band knife (4) and, in advance of said knife, applying pressure to the workpiece (14), using a row of pressure-applying elements (18) to deform a region of the workpiece in relation to the cutting plane (20) of the knife. By controlling the elements (18) to operate in successive sequences of combinations, regions of the workpiece (14) are successively skived as the workpiece (14) passes the knife (4). The operation of the elements (18) is controlled by a computer (CPU), having a memory in which workpiece information data, relating to certain workpiece parameters, as well as in accordance with shape, positional and orientational data is stored. Such data may be generated using optical recognition workpiece means (100, 120, 140, 160).

摘要: A workpiece is supported by work support means (40; 40'; 40''; 44'; 142, 144) for movement in a first direction by co-operating workpiece clamping and feeding means (46; 142, 144), both said means being supported on a carriage (16) for movement in a second direction normal to the first to move a workpiece relative to a sewing machine head. Both of said means are arranged on both sides of an elongated aperture (42) extending in the second direction in alignment with a needle penetration point (N). Stepping motors (24; 60) are provided for moving the carriage (16) and operating the workpiece clamping and feeding means (46; 142, 144) under programmed control. A camera (70) is also provided aligned with the aperture (42), for detecting the peripheral outline of a workpiece fed therebeneath. Computer means is effective, in response to the detected outline, to identify the workpiece type and its orientation and location on the workpiece support means and accesses an appropriate stitch pattern data file and modifies the data to take account of the workpiece orientation and location. The workpiece is then sewn according to the thus modified data.

摘要: For digitising a surface portion of a three-dimensional article a light source (14) is provided which projects onto the surface portion to be digitised of an article (S) a narrow band of light which extends over the surface portion. In addition, by effecting relative movement between the article and the light source (14) the narrow light band is caused to traverse progressively over the surface portion from one end thereof to the other. A camera (22) comprising a two-dimensional array of cells (26) monitors the location of the narrow light band at successive localities along its traversed path, the cells of the camera being illuminated according to the incidence thereon of light reflected from the narrow beam, and processor means is provided whereby the location of the narrow light band at selected intervals in its traverse are converted to digitised coordinate axis values, along three axes, said values thus being representative of the contour of the surface portion. The apparatus may be free-standing, serving to digitise the surface of an article, e.g. a shoe bottom, in an individual operation, or alternatively may be incorporated in a machine for effecting a progressive operation, again, e.g. on shoe bottoms. The apparatus may also be used for monitoring edges of components and for determining the configuration of marginal portions of such components, in order to enable the operating path of a tool at or adjacent such edge to be automatically determined, or may be used in a machine for pulling an article over a former e.g. a shoe pulling and lasting machine.
