A digital electronic system controls ignition performance and can provide an ignition discharge throughout an entire power stroke of a piston in a cylinder. The discharge can be controlled by a signal from a conventional distributor, crank trigger or other source (13). Controllable discharge of a capacitor (C2) occurs through the primary winding of an ignition coil (46). In addition, the capacitor (C2) may be both discharged and recharged in as oscillatory manner through the primary of the ignition coil (46). Such oscillatory discharging and recharging of the capacitor (C2) results in energy being delivered to the spark plug (50) during both discharge and recharge cycles, thereby resulting in the delivery of discharge energy to the spark plug (50) on a substantially continuous basis.

This invention provides an ignition system for a spark initiated internal combustion engine such as an Otto cycle engine. High voltage pulses are generated, for instance by way of an ignition coil, and these are passed to the respective spark gaps by way of semiconductor switches. These semiconductor switches are preferably bulk photoconductive switch devices which each comprise a light source and a photosensitive switch. These devices are under the control of control circuitry which activates and deactivates the light sources approximately to distribute the high voltage pulses to the spark plugs. These switches may be used to improve the rise time of the potential across the spark gap or to generate a plurality of sparks in one gap from a single pulse.

The invention relates to an ignition system, particularly of the static-distribution type, in which a respective ignition coil (C) with a primary winding (5) and a secondary winding (6) is coupled to the sparking plug (SP) associated with each cylinder. The system includes a respective switching transistor (T) for each ignition coil (C) and control circuit devices (4, 7 -11) which, in order to generate a spark in a plug (SP), cause a first switching of the corresponding transistor (T) from the shut-off condition to the conducting condition to start the flow of current in the primary winding (5) of the associated coil (C), and a second switching to the shut-off condition to stop the flow of current in the coil (C), causing the striking of the spark. These control circuit devices (4, 7 - 11) are arranged to control the speed of the first switching of the transistor or transistors (T) concerned from time to time, for each ignition, so that the first switching takes place gradually at a speed less than a predetermined value. The amplitude of the voltage peak which is applied to the sparking plug (SP) in correspondence with the first switching is thus drastically reduced.

Der Erfindung liegt das Problem zu Grunde, eine Schaltungsanordnung der vorgenannten Art und Komponenten für eine solche Schaltungsanordnung sowie ein Verfahren zum Betreiben der Schaltungsanordnung vorzuschlagen, die eine bessere Nutzung der Komponenten, insbesondere von Mitteln (12) zum Erzeugen von Zündimpulsen ermöglichen. Dieses ist durch das erfindungsgemäße Mittel (13) zum Verteilen von Zündimpulsen bzw. eine erfindungsgemäße Schaltungsanordnung (10) mit diesem Mittel (13) möglich.
