The invention relates to the manufacture of a cadmium sulphide photo-voltaic device. A substrate such as a glass is coated with successive layers which are made, in order, of tin oxide, cadmium sulphide, cuprous sulphide and copper to build up a photo-voltaic junction. In order to achieve a fast deposition rate of the cadmium sulphide while achieving a well ordered crystal structure the cadmium sulphide layer is deposited in two stages, the first involving spraying of a weak precursor solution and the second a substantially more concentrated solution to achieve at least a five times increase in the deposition rate. The invention also describes improved techniques for spraying and reducing the effects of the resistivity of the tin oxide first electrode.

The invention relates to a method and a jig for constructing a carcase-type article of furniture. A panel (102) which is to form a part (e.g. a door) of the finished article, is placed down on a horizontal surface. A jig is assembled around the panel (102) using the panel (102) as a template, the jig incorporating abutment blocks (111-113) to contact the edges of the panel (102) and locating blocks (124) in predetermined positions relative to the abutment blocks to define the positions of the carcase walls and to locate the walls in position while being secured to one another. The carcase walls are cut to the desired size, and placed edge down within the locating blocks (124) of the jig. Securing the walls to one another now forms a carcase the walls of which are correctly aligned with the edges of the panel.

Waveguide apparatus for use in substance analysis has a waveguide, with a surface area in contact with the substance, for transmitting electromagnetic radiation along the axis of the waveguide whereby propagation characteristics of the radiation are altered in accordance with properties of the substance adjacent the waveguide. A waveguide entrance prism is positioned at the radiation entrance end of the waveguide, for guiding radiation into the waveguide. The prism has a first face arranged at an angle with the waveguide axis to cause radiation entering the prism to propagate along the waveguide. In one embodiment, a longitudinal partition is arranged adjacent the waveguide substantially parallel to the waveguide axis, for partitioning the waveguide surface area into at least two parts so that multi-substance analysis can be carried out. In another embodiment, the waveguide entrance prism includes a first face perpendicular to the waveguide axis, and second and third faces at an angle to both the waveguide axis and the first face. In effect, two entrance prisms are provided in the second embodiment. The second embodiment also includes a reflector and filter at the distal end of the waveguide to filter and reflect radiation back to the entrance prism.
