The complex has an enhanced absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, particularly the lower gastrointestinal tract. The complex, and compositions and dosage forms prepared using the complex, provide for absorption by the body of iron through a period of ten to twenty-four hours, thus enabling a true one-daily dosage form for iron.

The present invention provides methods and compositions for stabilizing dried nucleic acids with carbohydrates such as non-reducing sugars, polysaccharides, and reducing sugars. Preferably, the stabilized nucleic acids are coated on a microprojection member for transdermal delivery. The invention further provides compositions and methods that involve the use of DNase inhibitors to stabilize dried nucleic acids delivered directly into bodily tissues.

The solvent is lauryl alcohol or lauryl lactate, the surfactant is selected from the group consisting of esters of polyhydric alcohols, ethoxylated castor oil, polysorbates, esters or ethers of saturated alcohols, and polyoxyethylenepolyoxypropylene block copolymers, and the polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyesters, pyrrolidones, esters or ethers of unsaturated alcohols, and polyoxyethylenepolyoxypropylene block copolymers.

The compositions include a biocompatible polymer, a biocompatible solvent having low water miscibility that forms a viscous gel with the polymer and limits water uptake by the implant, and a beneficial agent.
