A satellite communications system uses multiple ground stations and one or more satellites for communicating between mobile subscribers and a land-based communications network, such as the PSTN or the Internet. Multiple ground stations geographically dispersed minimize toll charges incurred routing calls from a mobile subscriber through the land network by reducing the need for long-distance calling. Further, because each ground station communicates with a given satellite using the same frequency spectrum, the subscriber capacity of the system increases and/or bandwidth requirements for the communications link between ground stations and satellites may be reduced. The present system uses ground-based beamforming techniques enabling each satellite to transmit signals in multiple transmission beams, each beam supporting one or more mobile subscribers. Each beam may reuse the same frequency spectrum, thereby increasing the number of subscribers supported by each satellite. Multiple ground stations cooperatively relay signals through a given satellite in a manner complementary with ground-based beamforming.

A mobile phone with a movable cover allows the user to preview caller ID information on a display that is normally concealed by the cover. In one embodiment, the user can open the cover to a preview position without accepting the call and then to a fully open position to accept the call after the caller ID information has been previewed. In another embodiment, the phone delays accepting the incoming call after the cover is opened to give the user time to preview the caller ID information and decide whether to answer the call.

Delays in a spread spectrum signal transmitted in a communications medium according to a spreading sequence may be determined by receiving a composite signal including the spread spectrum signal from the communications medium. The composite signal is correlated with the spreading sequence according to a first correlation length, to produce first time-offset correlations of the composite signal with the spreading sequence. Selected ones of the first time-offset correlations of the composite signal then are further correlated with the spreading sequence according to a second correlation length that is longer than the first correlation length, to produce second time-offset correlations of the composite signal with the spreading sequence. At least one of the second time-offset correlations may be selected. By providing variable length accumulation searchers, power and/or processing time can be saved by performing limited correlations for those delays that do not appear to be qualified candidates to be ultimately selected.

A transceiver which generates transmit and receive channel frequencies using a single crystal reference oscillator is disclosed. A first and second local oscillator is connected to the crystal reference oscillator. A first down converter is connected to the first local oscillator which mixes a receive signal with a first local oscillator frequency to produce a first intermediate frequency signal. The first intermediate frequency signal is then amplified and filtered and applied to a second down convertor which mixes the filtered first intermediate frequency signal with a second local oscillator frequency to produce a second intermediate frequency. A transmit frequency offset is then generated using the second local oscillator frequency. A transmit frequency generator generates a transmit frequency using the transmit frequency offset and the first local oscillator frequency.

A radiotelephone having an acoustical wave guide for channeling and directing sound energy into a microphone forming a part of the radiotelephone. The wave guide includes an elongated tube structure that varies in cross-sectional area from an inlet end to an outlet end thereof. More particularly, the wave guide is formed by a wall structure that includes portions that assume a wave configuration. This wave configuration gives rise to the varying cross-sectional area that is repeatedly found between the inlet and outlet end portions of the wave guide. This wave type configuration for the wave guide forms an acoustical low-pass filter that propagates and transmits non-resonant low frequencies in the range of 300 Hz to 3,000 Hz.

A secondary cellular backup device provides a secondary communication path to a cellular network for customer premise equipment (CPE) in case a primary broadband communication path is disrupted. A secondary device consistent with the invention may be connected directly to an existing household communication network such as telephone wiring or a cellular network to share the existing network with CPE. As such, the secondary device may be connected in parallel with other devices sharing a telephone wiring communication network. A method of connecting a secondary backup device for providing lifeline backup services and a method for switching between a primary broadband communication path and a secondary communication path is also provided.
