An alloy steel having particular utility for roll caster shells used in the direct casting of molten aluminum to sheet, consists of, in weight %, 0.25-0.45% C, 1.75-3.75% Cr, 0.75-2.5% Mo, 0.35 to 0.8% V, 0.3-1% Mn, greater than 0.4-1% Ni, 0.02% max P, 0.02% max S, up to 0.35% Si and balance essentially Fe. Roll caster shells fabricated from the steel have excellent toughness and ductility at room temperature to enable a greater shrink-fit with the core. The shells also have good resistance to heat checking. The excellent properties are provided by a controlled amount of Mo 2 C and VC as well as limiting the amount of C in solution.

The invention relates to an apparatus for moving an Iron Roughneck into position to allow making-up or breaking-out of threaded joints in a drill string. The apparatus may also be used to move other drilling equipment into position on the centerline of the well or at mouse holes. A self-balanced, dual synchronized parallelogram arm is utilized to accomplish the movement of the devices. Hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders are used for extension and retraction of the arm rather than to support the tool. The arm may hold the tool in any position without cylinder assistance. The linkage in the synchronized parallelogram may be accomplished by gears, links, slots, or rollers.

Control apparatus (75,70,65) senses fluid levels (50) and, in conjunction with a compressed gas source (80), maintains the compartment (32) fluid-free. Additionally, when the fluid level (55) in the enclosure (25) drops to a predetermined minimum, the speed of the agitator (20) may be slowed.

A winch system and methods for operating a winch system are disclosed. A wire (126) is spooled onto a drum (122) rotatably mounted to a shaft (206). A permanent magnet is mounted to the drum (122) such that, when an electric current is applied to a coiled winding mounted to the shaft (206), the drum (122) rotates about the shaft (206). The winch (120) comprises a first braking system that controls the rotation of the drum (122) about the shaft (206) by controlling the application of the electric current to the coiled winding. The winch (120) also comprises a second braking system (210) that mechanically engages the drum (122) so as to prevent the rotation of the drum (122) about the shaft (206). The winch (120) is used in conjunction with a control system that facilitates the use of the winch (120) with lifting and supporting personnel working in elevated environments.

Methods and apparatus for locating a member (27) within an aperture are disclosed. One preferred apparatus includes a housing (10) containing at least one rotatably connected ring (14), and a plurality of tie members (22) spaced evenly about the perimeter of the ring (14). The tie members (22) are connected to the rotating ring (14) and the housing (10) such that rotation of the ring (14) pulls the tie members (22) taut across the inside of the ring (14). Rotating the ring (14) in the opposite direction returns the tie members (22) to their initial orientation. When the tie members (22) are taut, they urge a member (27) passing through an opening towards the centre of the apparatus. When the apparatus is installed in a drilling rig floor, it results in a simple and effective pipe centring technology.
