Disclosed herein is a cover for a rod end of an actuator. The cover comprises a mounting collar for surrounding and mounting to a portion of the rod end. The collar is deformable such that it may be mounted over a rod eye mounted to the rod end. The cover further comprises a shield extending from the collar and shaped such that when attached to the rod end the shield shields a portion of rod end to prevent fluid or foreign object ingress to the rod end. Also disclosed is a rod end assembly comprising a rod end and a cover mounted thereto and a method of assembling and retro-fitting a rod end and cover.

A wear resistant coating is applied to the thrust surfaces and bore surfaces of a connecting rod. The wear resistant coating includes a polymer matrix, such as polyamide imide (PAI), solid lubricant, and hard particles including Fe2O3. The wear resistant coating is typically applied by spraying or rolling. The wear resistant coating adheres well to metal and provides lubrication. Thus, the wear resistant coating can reliably reduce wear, scuff, and seizure along the surfaces of the connecting rod as the piston reciprocates and crank shaft rotates during operation of the internal combustion engine. The likelihood of engine contamination caused by metal shavings from wear of the connecting rod is reduced, and the life of the connecting rod and engine is increased.

A piston rod (18) and a rod cover (22) which constitute this hydraulic cylinder (10) are configured from aluminum or an aluminum alloy. An alumite coating film (58) is formed on at least a part of the inner wall surface of the rod cover (22) that constitutes a rod insertion hole (20), and a diamond-like carbon coating film (42) is formed on the outer wall surface of the piston rod (18), said diamond-like carbon coating film (42) being in sliding contact with the alumite coating film (58).

The invention concerns a connecting rod for an internal combustion engine which allows reduction in contact pressure on a power transmitting pin from a region around an axially outward end of a connecting hole. A hole 15 is formed in a connecting rod base material 14. A coating layer 16 formed of a coating material which is softer than the base material 14 is deposited on an inner peripheral surface of the hole 15. The hole 15 has: a cylindrical inner surface portion 17 with a constant inner diameter, formed in an axially central region, and a tapered inner surface portion 18 continuous with an axially outer side of the inner surface portion 17 and radially enlarged in an axially outward direction. The coating layer 16 has: a first coating portion 19 deposited on the inner surface portion 17 and having an inner face with an approximately constant inner diameter, and a second coating portion 20 which is deposited on the tapered inner surface portion 18 to adjoin the first coating portion 19 and gradually increases in thickness in the axially outward direction.
