The invention provides a SiC coated carbonaceous material and a carbonaceous material to be coated with SiC each of which is reduced in contents of such impurities as nitrogen and boron. The SiC coated carbonaceous material comprises a carbonaceous material and a SiC coating having a nitrogen content of 5 x 10 16 atoms/cm 3 or lower as measured by SIMS. Further, the SiC-coated carbonaceous material comprises a carbonaceous material and a SiC coating having a boron content of 2 x 10 16 atoms/cm 3 or lower as measured by SIMS. The carbonaceous substrate material preferably has nitrogen content of 5 x 10 18 atoms/cm 3 or lower as measured by SIMS. The base carbonaceous material also preferably has boron content of 1 x 10 16 atoms/cm 3 or lower as measured by SIMS.

A mandrel for producing quartz glass, comprising at least two columnar or cylindrical, carbon fiber-reinforced, carbon composite material-made members joined in series by screw units. The mandrel is carbon-impregnated and/or carbon-coated on the screw units, and, in addition, may be provided with reinforcing members on the outer sides of the screw portions. Quartz glass fine particles obtained by flame-hydrolyzing a volatile silicon compound are deposited, using this mandrel, on the surface of a heat-resisting base or on a pilot rod at the end of the mandrel to easily form a large porous quartz glass matrix, the glass matrix is dehydrated and transparently vitrified to produce a large optical fiber matrix, and further the optical fiber matrix is drawn to produce a low-cost, high-precision optical fiber. In addition, a columnar or cylindrical mandrel for producing quartz glass is disposed at the center of a heat-resisting mold, is filled with silicon dioxide powder, and melted in a heating furnace for vitrifying, thereby producing a large, high-precision quartz glass element at low costs.

The circumferentially reinforced layers resist a force tending to expand a drum portion of the crucible, and the axially reinforced layers resist a force tending to push down a bottom of the crucible. The axially reinforced layers extending from the bottom to the drum portion can be formed by at least either of a level winding having a contact angle of 0 DEG to 10 DEG relative to the central axis or a poral winding, and the circumferentially reinforced layers in areas adjacent to the drum portion out of the drum portion and the bottom portion can be formed by at least either of a parallel winding having a contact angle of 70 DEG to 90 DEG relative to the central axis or a helical winding. When the axially reinforced layers cover the center of the bottom, an integral crucible of C/C composite material with no hole is provided. The surface of the C/C composite material is impregnated and covered with a pyrolytic carbon to improve resistance to going SiC.

A plurality of output terminals (10 to 15) are provided on the matching board (4) connected directly to a common current collecting line (8). Preferably, connections are also provided directly between adjacent ones of the output terminals. With the arrangement of the invention, the power line voltage drop is minimized thereby decreasing power losses.

An inductive heating device for uniformly heating a workpiece at rest has in one embodiment of the invention a plurality of heating coil units (31 to 36) disposed so as to surround the workpiece (21). The heating coil units (31 to 36) are connected in parallel to a power source, and a transformer may be used to vary the voltage across the terminals of the outermost units to increase the current flowing through these outermost units. The device, therefore, has a very short insufficient heating temperature zones attributable to end magnetic flux effects. In another embodiment using a non-divided coil, the end effect may be reduced by adjusting the relationship between the distance between the end of the coil and the end of the workpiece and the clearance between the coil and the workpiece.
