Die Formkörper werden einer thermischen Nachbehandlung unterworfen. Dabei werden die Formkörper im Vakuum auf eine Temperatur erhitzt, bei der hochschmelzende Metalle, die in den Formkörpern als Verunreinigungen enthalten sind, verschwinden. Temperatur und Dauer der Erhitzung werden derart eingestellt, daß der pyrolytische Graphit keine Formveränderungen und keine in einem optischen Mikroskop sichtbaren Strukturveränderungen erfährt und daß kein Verdampfen des pyrolytischen Graphits auftritt.

L'invention concerne un procédé de graphitisation continue par effet Joule direct de produits carbonés longs disposés verticalement, dans un four, en colonne, sous une contrainte axiale, ladite colonne 28 étant entourée de grains carbonés 40 contenus par une virole 41 périphérique, procédé dans lequel on déplace la colonne 28 progressivement vers le haut, tandis que les grains carbonés 40 descendent contre-courant, par gravité le long de la colonne, chacun des produits constituant la colonne traversant successivement une zone d'entrée, une zone de montée progressive en température par échange thermique avec les grains carbonés chauds graphitisés, jusqu'à atteindre la température de graphitisation simultanée avec les grains carbonés, une zone de refroidissement par échange thermique avec les grains carbonés froids et une zone de sortie, et en ce que l'on extrait d'une part, à la partie supérieure du four les produits longs 57 graphitisés et d'autre part, à la partie inférieure 50 du four les grains carbonés graphitisés. A method for producing graphite structures which are of light weight and excel in elasticity from a carbonaceous material comprises in succession the steps of: (a) treating said carbonaceous material with nitric acid or a nitric-sulfuric acid mixture, (b) bringing the acid-treated carbonaceous material into contact with a basic aqueous solution to make it soluble, (c) adding an acidic aqueous solution to the obtained soluble matter to regulate the pH of said soluble matter to 3 or less, thereby precipitating a carbonaceous component therefrom, and (d) graphitizing the thus precipitated carbonaceous component at 2,400°C or higher temperature.

The present invention provides an isotropic graphite article for nuclear application produced by molding under pressure and graphitizing a mixture of isotropic high coefficient of thermal expansion carbon particles and carbonaceous pitch binder, characterized in that the particles are flour having particle size up to 75 microns (0.075 mm) and are present in the amount of 30 to 70 weight percent of the mixture, and that the mixture is isostatically molded. It also provides a process for making isotropic graphite articles for nuclear application wherein isotropic high coefficient of thermal expansion carbon particles are mixed with a carbonaceous pitch binder, molded under pressure, baked, impregnated, re-baked, and graphitized, characterized by attritor milling the carbon particles to form a flour having particle size up to 75 microns (0.075 mm); mixing the flour with the pitch binder at elevated temperature to provide a mixture comprising 30 to 70 weight percent flour; milling the mixture; and isostatically molding the milled mixture at elevated temperature prior to baking.

The method according to the invention relates to the continuous graphitization of prefired long carbonaceous products. It comprises the displacement of carbonaceous product in column (14) according to a horizontal displacement axis (F1), inside a furnace (12) of which the lining is a divided carbonaceous material which does not move inside the furnace (12). The column (14) is strained by jacks (21, 18) and the heating thereof is provided by Joule effect. The method is particularly applied to the manufacturing of graphite electrodes for arc furnaces in the steel making industry.
