A valve comprises first and second valve elements (22, 40) operable by a common control element (50). Rotation of the control element (50) causes displacement of the first valve element (22) towards and away from a first valve seat (28) by means of a cam surface on a cam portion (36). Depression of the control element (50) displaces the second valve element (40) towards and away from a second valve seat (46). The control element (50) cooperates with the body (2) of the valve so that it can be depressed only when in the rotational position corresponding to the opening of the first valve element (22). A bladder connected to an outlet spigot (8) can be inflated by a pump attached to an inlet spigot (4) which is provided with a non-return valve (66), when the first valve element (22) is open and the second valve element (40) is closed. Release of air from the bladder can be achieved by rotating the control element (50) to open the valve element (22), and then depressing the control element (50) to open the valve element (40).

Erfindungsgemäß wird vorgeschlagen, das Mittel (24,26) vorgesehen sind, die es ermöglichen, den Druck in dem Rezipienten (10, 12) reversibel zu erhöhen oder zu reduzieren. Ferner betrifft die Erfindung ein Verfahren zur Steuer- und/oder Regelung des Druckniveaus mindestens eines volumenvariablen Rezipienten (10, 12) eines pneumatischen Systems, insbesondere eines pneumatischen Systems für einen Kraftfahrzeugsitz (14). A self-inflating support device or cushion (10) consists of an envelope (11) defining a closed space, a compressible material contained within the envelope (11) and valve means (15) adapted to allow air into the envelope (11) so that the compressed material can expand to enlarge the support device (10) and to allow air out of the envelope (11) so that the material may be compressed and the support device (10) reduced in size. The valve means (15) comprises a valve member (21) and a valve seat (22) adapted to form a seal therebetween when the valve (15) is closed, an actuator (20) which whilst actuated separates the valve member (21) and valve seat (22) to permit air flow into and out of the device (10) for adjustment of the volume of air within the device (10) and locking means (26, 47) for maintaining the valve (15) fully open when it is desired to fill or empty the device (10) with air.

A system of inflatable air cells is constructed and installed in a seat at locations that are strategic to the comfort of the user. The air cells are connected to a pump through a manifold which sequentially connects each cell independently to the pump. The manifold controls the flow of fluid in the air cell distribution system by means of a system of valves and senses the pressure in each cell by means of a transducer. A microcomputer is programmed with data representing a desired comfort level for each of the air cells. By sequentially activating individual manifold valves, a pressure signal from the transducer can be generated for each cell. The pressure signals are received by the microcomputer and are correlated with the predetermined comfort data to generate a control signal which activates the pump. In this manner each of the cells can be individually inflated or deflated to the desired pressure level. By varying the number and location of the cells the system becomes responsive to the localized pressures exerted on the body for a great variety of users.

A system for inflating e.g. a pair of lumbar support bags of a vehicle seat comprises two pumps (4) each connected to a respective bag and controlled by a common electronic control system (7). The control system causes each bag to be inflated over a period of between 1 and 10 minutes, the inflation of one bag taking place whilst the other bag is deflated and vice versa to produce alternating pressure zones in the lumbar region. Inflation of each bag is produced by a multiplicity of individual spaced apart energizations of the associated pump. The duration and spacing of the energizations is variable to produce the desired complete inflation of a bag within the required period. In the preferred embodiment the duration of each energization is preset during manufacture of the system but the spacing of the energizations is under the control of the user of the seat to vary the duration of the inflate/deflate cycle.
