The prosthetic foot (1) consists of three or four laminas, a lower lamina (1a) defining the under-heel and the foot front, a rear lamina (1 b) defining the heel and functioning as the Achilles tendon and as the soleus muscle, two upper laminas (1c and 1d) defining the front part of the foot and performing the function of the front tibial muscle, and a connector (2) in proximity to the ankle to serve as a coupling for a tube (3). The aim of this prosthetic foot is to simulate the behaviour of the human foot, in such a manner as to ensure good rear flexure and effective plantar flexure. The use of three or four laminas enables continuous energy absorption/return by the foot such as to allow assisted walking by the prosthetic foot at every moment. The prosthetic foot always operates via at least two laminas, of which one absorbs and the other returns energy. The device is arranged to be housed within an aesthetic covering.

The invention relates to an artificial foot which comprises a longitudinal axis extending from a heel area to a toe area, a length, a width and a height, a connection to a lower leg part, a supporting structure (3) which is topmost in relation to the height, an elastic sole structure (2) extending from the heel area to the toe area, and an elastic connecting element (10) which is arranged between the upper supporting structure (3) and the sole structure (2). The aim of the invention is to provide an artificial foot which allows the rolling off process to be conveniently controlled while providing sure footing. For this purpose, the upper supporting structure (3) is connected to the sole structure (2) by means of a coupling system (4) in approximately the middle of the foot with respect to its length, said coupling system allowing a relative tilting movement between the supporting structure (3) and the sole structure (2) while maintaining the distance between the supporting structure (3) and the sole structure (2) in the center of the coupling system (4) constant at least while a patient places his weight on it when standing up.

A prosthetic foot includes a sole plate having a body formed of resilient material. The sole plate is elongated along an anterior and posterior axis wherein an anterior portion of the plate defines a toe portion and the posterior portion defines a heel portion. An ankle member having a planar portion in contact with the sole plate is rigidly affixed to the sole plate at the heel portion. The ankle member has an extension portion positioned anterior of the planar portion and separated from the planar portion by a transition portion. A resilient pad is disposed between the contact portion of the ankle member and the sole plate. The resilient pad and extension portion of ankle member define a gap such that as a user's weight is transferred anterior following initial contact, the extension portion of the ankle member tilts forward reducing the gap formed between the resilient pad and the extension portion for improving the dorsiflexion of the prosthetic foot.

A device (125) connected between the upper end of the calf shank and the lower portion of the prosthesis can be used to assist posterior movement of the upper end of a calf shank and control anterior movement of the upper end of the calf shank during use of the prosthesis. The device (125) has springs which store energy during force loading with anterior motion of the upper end of the calf shank in gait and which, during force unloading, return the stored energy as kinetic power for adding to the propulsive force on the user's body generated by the prosthesis in gait.

A prosthetic foot (70) incorporates a foot keel (71) and a calf shank (72) connected to the foot keel to form an ankle joint area of the prosthetic foot. The foot keel has forefoot and hindfoot portions and an upwardly arched midfoot portion extending between the forefoot and midfoot portions. The calf shank includes a downward convexly curved lower end in the form of a spiral which is adjustably attached at a portion thereof to the foot keel by way of a coupling element. The calf shank extends upward anteriorly from the spiral to an upstanding upper end thereof. The coupling element includes a stop of a predetermined size to limit dorsiflexion of the calf shank in gait. The calf shank creates an integrated ankle and calf shank with the foot keel which has a variable radii response outcome similar to the disclosed parabola shaped calf shank while being readily covered by a cosmetic covering for the foot, ankle and lower leg.

The present invention provides a prosthetic foot (10) that provides both energy storage capabilities and stability. The prosthetic foot (10) of the present invention provides medial-lateral rotation as compared to the slight tilting or rocking in the medial-lateral plane of the prior art devices. Furthermore, the prosthetic foot (10) of the present invention provides a true hinge in the ankle joint region that may be adapted so that the degree of rotation is controlled.
