A positioning system is provided that effectively engage the patient's neck/shoulder area so as to enable the caudally migration of the patient's neck/shoulder(s). An instance of the system includes a puller member for engaging a patient's neck/shoulder area and applying a pulling force thereupon. A support member is provided that is joined to the pulling member at a location away from where the engagement portion of the pulling member contacts the patient during normal use. The support member and the joining thereto are operational to enable the pulling member to adjustably maintain a substantially fixed vertical elevation that aligns the engagement portion of the pulling member to effectively engage the patient's neck/shoulder area; and, the support member also has a variable shuttle member that is adjustably joined to a guide member for adjusting the removable joining position of the support member along a length of a guide member. This guide member is configured to have a substantially parallel orientation relative to a longitudinal axis of the engagement portion of the pulling member such that the pulling member is operable for being positioned relative to the patient and effectively engage the patient's neck/shoulder area so as to enable the caudally migration of the patient's neck/shoulder(s). A method for using the apparatus is also included.

A portable life support apparatus (1102) and particularly a respiratory support apparatus adapted to be easily mounted to a stretcher is disclosed. Prior devices that attach onto a stretcher are heavy and cumbersome and obstruct access to the patient. Accordingly, there is a great need for a portable emergency support device that overcomes the weight, size, positioning, and other portability disadvantages. One aspect relates to a portable life support device including at least one ambient gas inlet (14); a conditioned gas outlet (30); an oxygen concentrator (26,28) fluidly connected between the at least one gas inlet and the gas outlet, and a ventilator (44) fluidly connected downstream from the oxygen concentrator. A further aspect is directed to a portable life support apparatus in the form of a portable respiratory support apparatus (1102) capable of exploiting both ambient air and expired gas as oxygen sources, wherein the oxygen generator (20) and ventilator (10) are arranged end to end to provide a longitudinal profile that can thus be compactly secured to a stretcher or other similar emergency transport vehicle.

This invention is a self-contained isolation, and environmental protection life support system (10) for shielding a patient contained therein, or alternatively isolating a contaminated patient from a clean environment while allowing treatment of traumatic injuries to the patient. The system comprises the combination of an environmental control system (ECS) (11) and a containment enclosure (14) that are designed to function in concert with conventional life support stretcher. The ECS component possesses an air management system that is designed configured to extract contaminated particles, gas from the external air, and deliver the same to the patient contained within the containment enclosure. To facilitate such delivery, the containment enclosure is preferably provided with a plurality of tubular passages (48) which are designed to be filled with air provided by the ventilator system to thus cause the containment enclosure to expand to form a semi rigid structure. A multiplicity of apertures are formed upon the tubular passages that causes the purified air to pass therethrough, and wash over the patient in a head to toe direction such that rapid removal of toxic residues is facilitated.
