A method and apparatus for contacting and reacting fine cellulosic material with acid to produce partly-hydrolyzed cellulose, in which the cellulose is compressed to form higher density material, resulting in reduced consumption of acid and increased uniformity of reaction times. Cellulosic material, such as ground wood pulp, is compressed to reduce the interstitial spaces therein. The compressed material is contacted with an acid, such as sulfuric acid, which is allowed to wick into the interstitial spaces and react with the cellulose to produce partly-hydrolyzed cellulose.

The present invention relates to a process for reducing scaling by calcium carbonate precipitation on equipment in the pulp and paper industry. The process is especially advantageous in the production of paper and board. The process relates to an alkaline aqueous process fluid, which contains calcium ions and carbonate ions with a tendency for calcium carbonate scaling. The fluid is passed through equipment, wherein the fluid is subjected to a change in energy. Precipitation of calcium carbonate an d scaling on the equipment is prevented by introducing carbon dioxide into the fluid prior to its passage through the equipment. The invention also relates to the use of carbon dioxide for reducing scaling on equipment used in the pulp and paper industry.

The present invention relates to a process for the production of a cellulosic product which comprises providing an aqueous thick suspension containing cellulosic fibers having a fiber concentration of at least about 2% by weight; adding to the thick suspension an aluminum compound, alkaline earth metal salt and acid; diluting the obtained thick suspension to form a thin suspension; adding to the thin suspension one or more drainage and retention aids; and dewatering the obtained thin suspension. The invention further relates to a process for the production of a cellulosic product which comprises providing an aqueous thick suspension containing cellulosic fibers having a fiber concentration of at least about 2% by weight and an alkaline earth metal ion concentration of at least about 100 mg/l; adding to the thick suspension an aluminum compound and optionally an acid to obtain a pH of from about 4 to about 5.5; diluting the obtained thick suspension to form a thin suspension; adding to the thin suspension one or more drainage and retention aids; and dewatering the obtained thin suspension. The invention also relates to an aqueous composition comprising a mixture of an aluminum compound, alkaline earth metal salt and acid and the use of the composition.

The invention relates to a process for increasing bulk of a fiber product, in which process a fiber pulp, and further a fiber product, is formed. In accordance with the invention, in a first step a carbonate compound is added to the fiber pulp as a basic component, and in a second step acid is added as an acidic component, in order to form salt, to provide the formation of small- bubbled gas, and to increase the bulk, and the fiber pulp is dehydrated. The invention also relates to a corresponding fiber product and to the use thereof.

A method of manufacturing the fibrous web product is also provided. An aspect, in which the water-containing gel composition is a foamed gel composition which is in a gel state at ordinary temperature and which has a finely porous structure at an interior thereof, is preferable.

Carbon dioxide may be used to adjust the electrical properties of papermaking compositions. Such papermaking compositions may contain a colloid phase, an aqueous phase, and optionally, pulp fibers. Examples of electrical properties whose values may be adjusted include zeta potential, electrical charge demand, conductivity, and streaming potential. The carbon dioxide may be introduced at many different points in a papermaking process, including calcium carbonate slurry feeds, pulp fiber slurries, diluted pulp fibers slurries, broke, and whitewater. When a value or range of values based upon an electrical property is predetermined, such as an optimal value or range, introduction of carbon dioxide may be used to adjust the value such that it is closer to the predetermined value.
