Compound liquid crystal devices are disclosed which amplify the often small or relatively small values of achievable directional shift in the effective optic axis given by the electroclinic or ferroelectric response. By carefully choosing the relative directions of the optic axes in the elements, the undesired chromatic properties can be made to partially cancel, giving the combination a much smaller chromaticity than the single cells. Examples of device implementations are bright reflective displays, modulators, spatial light modulators, beam switches and deflectors, and polarization or phaseshifting switches capable of switching between binary or triple states. Multiple element compounds can instead enhance the chromatic dependence, giving electrically timable colour filters, e.g. such that can be rapidly scanned between three positions in the CIE colour diagram.

On the basis of the half-value width W necessary in this distribution, the retardation Δnd of the liquid crystal panel Pi and the number N of the liquid crystal elements Ci are so determined to obtain the band width Rout in the wavelength corresponding to the type of the color of the light desired. The system includes a nematic display panel (24) which, in one of its states, functions as a wave guide to rotate linearly polarized light from in a colored polarizer (23) to produce noncolored light (NC1) from an output polarizer (25). In its other state, the display panel (24) twists the linearly polarized light to emit therefrom predominantly linearly polarized light for enabling the output polarizer (25) to emit colored light (R2). The method of making the construction includes adjusting the angle of rotation in the wave guide state of the panel (24) until only noncolored light (NC1) is emitted from the output polarizer (25).

Die Erfindung betrifft eine Flüssigkristallzellenanordnung, die aus mindestens zwei Flüssigkristallzellen LCD1,LCD3 und aus einer Anzahl von Polarisatoren P1,P2,P3,P4 besteht, deren Anzahl um eins höher ist als die Anzahl der Flüssigkristallzellen. Polarisatoren und Flüssigkristallzellen sind im Strahlengang einer Lichtquelle derart hintereinander angeordnet, daß sich Polarisatoren und Flüssigkristallzellen abwechseln, wobei durch die separate elektrische Ansteuerung der einzelnen Flüssigkristallzellen am Ausgang der Flüssigkristallanzeige Licht in vorgebbaren Farbwerten erzeugbar ist. Dadurch, daß zwei Flüssigkristallzellen LCD1 und LCD3 verwendet werden, mittels der die Polarisationsebene des durchtretenden Lichtstrahls bezüglich seines roten und grünen Spektralanteils bei elektrischer Ansteuerung um etwa 90 o verdrehbar ist, und drei Polarisatoren P1,P2,P4 vorgesehen sind, wobei der erste Polarisator P1 ein Grünfilter, der zweite Polarisator P2 ein Graufilter und der dritte Polarisator P4 ein Rotfilter ist, läßt sich der Aufwand zur Herstellung der Zellenanordnung deutlich herabsetzen, da ausschließlich Standardbauelemente verwendet werden.
