This invention pertains to automobile wallpaper, and in particular to an exterior surface finishing agent for the headliner, door trim, and seats of automobiles, as well as its manufacturing method. To manufacture such automobile wallpaper, a printing liquid comprising a thermoplastic microspheres is printed on the surface of a surface material which is currently being used, in order to render a three-dimensional effect to the surface when heated, so as to achieve various luxurious appearances. The invention is able to maintain the three-dimensional effect of the printing even during the molding process, and it also possesses excellent properties relative to sound absorbency, due to the three-dimensional effect of the surface.

Granular material (G) applied to the surface of the drum is held by vacuum in the desired pattern. After removal of excess granular material, the vacuum is discontinued causing the granular material to disengage from the drum surface and pass, by force of gravity, onto the surface of the substrate in the form of the predetermined element of the desired predetermined pattern. An apparatus for laying down a continuous, predetermined pattern of granular material upon a moving substrate is also described.

A patterned decorative material is prepared by a method which comprises application of a thermosetting powder coating material (2) to a base plate (1); melting of the thermosetting powder coating material by heating (3); embossing of the coating layer alone or both of the coating layer and the base plate (4A-4B) while the melt thermosetting powder coating material has a gel fraction formed by a hardening reaction in the range from 0 to 75 weight percent; and further heating (5) to form a hardened coating (6) on the base plate. The patterned decorative material prepared is excellent in appearance, corrosion resistance, weathering resistance and abrasion resistance and free from the defects of conventional steel plate coated with polyvinyl chloride and the like such as formation of craze and loss of luster.

A decorative article (10) is made by a process in which a controlled-flatness substrate (20) having an effective edge (16) in a closed pattern on its surface receives a fluent plastic composition which is cast into an area (18) defined by the edge (16). The fluent plastic flows to the effective edge (16) and is then cured to form a clear plastic cap (14). During casting and curing the substrate (12) is held flat and horizontal by reason of its being releasably adhered to a flat, smooth-surfaced, stiff release liner. The resulting decorative article is free of optical distortions and may be used as a covering, preferably for an elongated automotive component such as an external vertical pillar (24) between the passenger compartments of an automobile.
