rDNA corresponding to an endosymbiotic bacteria associated with Ecteinascidia turbinata has been identified. The bacterium appears to be responsible for the biosynthesis of ecteinascidin compounds. The 16S rDNA sequence corresponding to Candidatus Endoecteinascidia frumentensis SEQ ID NO: 1 has been deposited in GeneBank with the accession number AY054370.

The present invention relates to a novel species of the Desulfitobacterium genus capable of dehalogenating haloalkanes under anaerobic conditions. The invention relates further to compositions and methods for dehalogenating haloalkanes. The properties of the novel bacterium of the present invention allows applications such as the in situ remediation of anaerobic contaminated sites. Halogenated compounds which can be degraded with the bacteria of the present invention include pollutants such as 1,2-dichloroethane and 1,2-dichloropropane.

A method of washing parts including the steps of placing an article in a first chamber (20), circulating a washing liquid (82) from a second reservoir (80) to the first reservoir (20) to wash the surfaces of the article in contact with the liquid, passing the washing liquid (82) through a porous medium (38), draining the washing liquid from the first chamber (20) into the second chamber (80), removing organic matter in the washing liquid (82) and recirculating the washing liquid from the second chamber (80) to the first chamber (20), is also provided.
