A pneumatic bearing (3) is defined by a gap between the rings (2) and the shaft (1). The shaft is provided with heating means including heating medium passages (6) extending through the shaft for heating the shaft to prevent shrinkage of a rolled strip (B) due to temperature variations of the strip caused by contact of it with the detector. Bending means (5) are provided at opposite ends of the shaft for bending the shaft into a convex shape in a predetermined direction so as to prevent formation of longitudinal wrinkles on the rolled strip.

A device for use in measuring the vibration of a rotating blade of a gas turbine of like machine comprises a probe (4) including an outer casing (11) accommodated in a light-projecting optical fibre (6), a light-receiving optical fibre (7), a quartz glass lens (8) at the outlet end of the light-projecting fibre (7) and a protective glass (10) of quartz glass at the tip (5) of the probe (4). Coolant channels (12,13,14) extend through the outer casing. In use, the probe is installed on a gas turbine having a casing (3) in which an air channel (15) is defined. The tip (5) of the probe (4) is directed towards the blades (1) of the gas turbine and is situated in the flow of air through the air channel (15).

A fountain coater includes a backing roll (2) which is rotatably mounted, a fountain (5) having a slit (9) therein which is positioned adjacent the periphery of the backing roll (2) and is adapted to supply a coating colour to the surface of a web (3) in engagement with the periphery of the backing roll and a metering element (7) situated adjacent the periphery of the backing roll at a position downstream of the fountain in the direction of rotation of the backing roll for removing excess coating colour from the web. The fountain (5) is pivotally mounted and connected to an angular adjustment mechanism (29) whereby its angle of inclination with respect to the backing roll is adjustable. The fountain (5) is mounted to pivot about an axis (B) which is substantially coincident with its tip whereby when the angle of the fountain is adjusted the size of the gap between its tip and the web does not alter.
