The invention relates to a method for rolling strip-type in-process stock, in particular a metal strip (3). According to said method, the metal strip (3) is unwound from a coil (2, 7) that is held on an unwinding reel (1, 6), fed into a reversing rolling mill (8), rolled and then wound onto a winding reel (9) to form a coil (10). The metal strip (3) is conveyed from the unwinding reel (1, 6) to the winding reel (9) and reversed until the desired thickness of the metal strip has been obtained, whereby the thickness of said strip reduces with each pass of the reversing rolling mill (8). The end of the metal strip (3) of a first coil is welded to the beginning of the metal strip (3) of a second coil and the metal strip (3) of the first coil is temporarily stored in a strip storage device during the welding process. The in-process stock consisting of two lengths is then reversibly rolled to its final dimensions and an additional length is welded to the end of the in-process stock prior to the last pass. The invention also relates to an installation for carrying out said process. In said installation, the unwinding reel (1, 6) is used as the strip storage device during the reverse passes.

According to the present invention, it is possible to prevent any deterioration in the quality of a product which is caused by temperature variations during the hot rolling of the magnesium alloy sheet, and it is possible to improve the yield and increase productivity.
