An optical disk (10) is disclosed which records information that can be optically read. The disk has a spiral guide track (14). The disk further includes a single index field (20) and a plurality of sectors (18). The index field includes an index mark (22) that indicates the position at which an optical head is caused to jump for repeated trace of a specific portion of the guide track. Each of the sectors has a sector head (26) and a data field (30) that comes following the sector head. The sector head comprises a sector mark (26) located at the head of the sector and an address field (28). This address field contains a track address, a sector address, and an error detecting and correcting code. The index mark in the index field is detected, and the optical head is made to perform a jumping operation in response to the resultirg signal, whereby the jumping operation is rendered certain. When the address fields are being read, if some sector addresses cannot be read due to drop-out or for other cause, tie signal produced by detecting the index marks are counted by a counter into which the signal produced by detecting the sector marks is clocked, for preparing the sector addresses.

This optical disc has a plurality of sectors (S₀ - S n ) forming a data read-only area (4) and a write/read area (3). Each area has track sectors (S₀ - S n ) each having a sector identifier portion (ID) in which address information is recorded and a data field portion (DF) to record data. Datafield identification flags (F₁, F₂) indicative of the read-only area (4) and the write/read area (3) are recorded in the respective identifier portions. On reading or writing this optical disc, the data field identification flag is detected to identify (l6, 26, 28) the kind of related area i.e., read-only area or write/read area. Thus, it is possible to avoid (l8 - 22; 28, 34) erroneous recording of data into the read-only area. Upon reading operation, waveform equalization and binary-clipping level of reproduction signals can be well controlled (26, 37, 39). The gain of the servo loop can be switched (53, 54). The track searching operation can be stably performed (58 - 63). The data reading and data writing into the data write/read area can be improved.

Further, an optical disc (11) having sectors of stable address reproduction alone detects a sector of unstable reproduction at the time of inspection, and overwrites a predetermined signal in the address part (1) of the particular sector to make subsequent reproduction of the address impossible.

When a sector to or from which a data is to be recorded or reproduced is a defective sector or a non-use sector because of updating, the sector must be processed such that it is discriminated in a reproduction cycle. A special pattern signal is recorded on the defective sector or the non-use sector, and if the recorded special pattern signal is detected in the reproduction cycle, that sector is determined as the defective or non-use sector and recording or reproducing on or from that sector is inhibited.
