摘要: A blended wing body aircraft may include a blended wing configured to house a person, payload and/or cargo within the wing, a surface structure, and an actuator. The actuator may be configured to controllably cause the planar structure to extend downwardly from an underside surface of the wing oriented such that the planar structure forms a sweep angle with the aircraft between -70 and 70 degrees. Substantially each point on the planar structure may be behind a leading edge of the wing and in front of a trailing edge of the wing by at least 5% of the length of the chord of the wing that passes through the point. The actuator may be configured to controllably cause the planar structure to extend downwardly from an underside surface of the wing with an orientation that causes an increase in static pressure ahead of the hinge line of the planar structure and a decrease aft of the hinge line during forward movement of the aircraft, as compared to when the planar structure is not extended. Deployment of all planar structures may increase the aircraft's control pitching moment and/or lift by more than 5 percent as compared to when they are not deployed.

摘要: A method and apparatus (100) are described for locating a bifurcation (125) of an artery(115) . An elongated probe (110) having a plurality of ultrasonic transducers (120-1 to 120-N) , and an indicator attached to each transducer (120), is moved along the artery. Each transducer transmits ultrasound signals to the portion of the anatomy located underneath the transducer(120), and receives echo signals reflected from the portion of the anatomy. The echo signals are analyzed to detect any presence of blood flow. Each indicator(130) generates output reference signals, for example light or sound, only if blood flow is detected by its associated transducer. The bifurcation is located by observing when a two-group pattern of output reference signals from the indicators merges into a single-group pattern of output reference signals. A single signaling device may be used instead of a plurality of indicators. Once the bifurcation is located, the probe may be switched into a measuring mode, in which the thickness of intima media is measured at the bifurcation.

摘要: Many individuals generate excessively loud snoring during their sleep, often to the point where others cannot tolerate sleeping in the same room with them. Most cases of snoring are caused by excessive bulk and flaccidity of soft tissues of the palate and uvula that vibrate as air flows past them. These palate and uvula contain muscles whose contractions can stiffen and displace the soft tissues so that they do not vibrate. The invention provides electrical stimulation that causes the oropharyngeal muscles to contract during sleep using one or more microstimulators injected into or near these muscles or the nerves which innervate them. The invention also provides methods of determining the anatomical structures implicated in snoring and testing such locations for effective placement and stimulation of muscle contraction to decrease the frequency or magnitude of snoring.

摘要: A biosensing device for detecting biological analytes, and methods of use and manufacture, are disclosed. The device includes a biosensing element that can remain implanted for extended periods of time. The biosensing element is connected to an optical fiber terminating outside of the body. The optical fiber is also connected to an information analyzer. The information analyzer directs light through the optical fiber into the biosensing element. The light excites fluorophores, created by a chemical reaction between analytes and biosensing material within the biosensing element. Emitted fluorescent light is redirected through the optical fiber to the information analyzer. Optical gratings within the filtering member of the information selectively deflect fluorescent emissions into a cladding layer. Detectors attached to the cladding layer detect the deflected fluorescent emissions and, according to their determined wavelength, report the presence or quantity of specific analytes to the patient on an external display.

摘要: A liquid organic fuel cell is provided which employs a solid electrolyte membrane. An organic fuel, such as a methanol/water mixture, is circulated past an anode of a cell while oxygen or air is circulated past a cathode of the cell. The cell solid electrolyte membrane is preferably fabricated from Nafion™. Additionally, a method for improving the performance of carbon electrode structures for use in organic fuel cells is provided wherein a high surface-area carbon particle/Teflon™-binder structure is immersed within a Nafion™/methanol bath to impregnate the electrode with Nafion™. A method for fabricating an anode for use in a organic fuel cell is described wherein metal alloys are deposited onto the electrode in an electrodeposition solution containing perfluorooctanesulfonic acid. A fuel additive containing perfluorooctanesulfonic acid for use with fuel cells employing a sulfuric acid electrolyte is also disclosed. New organic fuels, namely, trimethoxymethane, dimethoxymethane, and trioxane are also described for use with either conventional or improved fuel cells.
