Metal vapour-liquid contact plates are disposed in face-to-face contact with respective corrugations inclined to the horizontal across a notional plane. A perforated lamella may be disposed across the notional plane. The metal packing which may also be of slit or louvered construction is disposed within a vapour-liquid contact column for the purpose of bringing about mass and heat transfer between liquid and vapour passing in opposite directions therethrough. The body portion of each plate comprises metal that has been slit to provide both surfaces thereof with a very large number of apertures with little wasted material. The metal lands defining the apertures may be twisted and angulated. The apertures in the plates trap liquid and expose it to the vapour stream on both sides of the plates affording self-spreading of the liquid and turbulent vapour flow therethrough. In this manner, the assembly affords optimal pressure drop characteristics, surface to vapour passage area ration, and vapour-liquid distribution characteristics. The laminate plate formation may also afford select flow and turbulence characteristics through capillary action between offset laminate land areas of the sheets.

An apparatus for steam reforming of hydrocarbons is described comprising a steam reformer containing a plurality of externally- heated vertical tubes (17) each tube having an inlet for a feed gas mixture comprising hydrocarbon and steam, and an outlet for a reformed gas mixture, wherein the tubes contain a particulate steam reforming catalyst (18) adjacent the outlet and a structured steam reforming catalyst (19) adjacent the inlet. A process for steam reforming of hydrocarbons using said apparatus is also described.

A mixing element 1 includes: a cylindrical passage tube 2 through which fluid flows; a plurality of spiral rightward rotation type first blades 3 formed of a perforated object, which are provided in the passage tube 2; a first inner cylindrical tube 5 shaped like a cylinder and disposed inside the blades 3; a plurality of spiral rightward rotation type blades 6 provided in the inner cylindrical tube 5; and an opening 9 formed in the axial center portion of the blades 6. A static fluid mixer is formed by using at least one mixing element 1 mentioned above.

Der Gas- oder Dampfstrom fliesst in den Strömungskanälen und der Flüssigkeitsstrom auf dem Metallgewebe. Die Strömungskanäle benachbarter Lagen kreuzen sich offen. Der Winkel zwischen den sich kreuzenden Kanälen ist kleiner als rund 100°. Bei diesem Verfahren wird die Gewebepackung mit einer relativ kleinen Flüssigkeitsbelastung beaufschlagt. Das Metallgewebe bildet einen Träger für den Flüssigkeitsstrom, der weitgehend frei von Löchern oder anderen Durchbrüchen ist. Für die Flüssigkeitsbelastung werden Werte gemäss der Beziehung L/a
