A transfer multi-layer material (10) for customized printing of color images with a holographic appearance is described. The transfer recording material comprises a multilayer structure (10) on a carrier forming a plurality of panels (20,22). A portion of the multilayer structure corresponding to a panel comprises an embossable layer (holographic layer) wherein each pixel (1,2,...,n) is configured to diffract incoming light at a predetermined angle α 1 . The panels may be tinted in one of the YMCK primary colors. Alternatively, either of the layers of the multi-layer material can be tinted. Each pixel corresponding to the embossable layer of an adjacent tinted panel is configured to diffract incoming light at a different predetermined angle α 2 . The transfer material can have as many panels as desired, each of the layers having an embossable layer with the pixels configured to diffract incoming light at a certain angle α. The transfer material is therefore formed by a plurality of spaced-apart panels each of which comprises an embossable holographic layer diffracting light at a predetermined angle different from that of other panels. Upon activation of a surface of a printer head, tinted pixels from different panels transfer onto a substrate, either in a blended or stand-alone fashion, forming a desired color image with a holographic appearance.

A method for selectively removing metal from a metallized substrate (e.g., a metallized polymer film) and the formation of devices thereby are provided. The method involves selectively exposing the metallized surface to a demetallizing (i.e., an oxidizing) chemical solution. The metallized layer can be selectively exposed to the demetallizing solution using a flexographic printing process wherein printing rollers are used to transfer the demetallizing solution to the metallized surface. An identification device (10) including, for example, a holographic, retro-reflective, or other metallized material (12) and a radio-frequency transponder are also provided, including an RF chip in electrical communication with an antenna (22). The identification device including the holographic image (18) allows both electronic identification through the reading of identification data stored in the chip and optical identification via the holographic image.

Each identification mark consisting of hologram or diffraction grating having a unique diffractive property which can be detected with optical identification means is formed on a seal, and, by affixing such seals as a combination and reading them, the analysis or forgery of each identification mark is made highly difficult. Since the possible modes of combination and the possible number of combinations can be freely and easily selected, high levels of expandability, identification power and handling facility can be achieved at a relatively low cost. This system can be applied to various articles such as information storage cards including magnetic cards, and keys. By using the system for verifying the authenticity of the article, an effective prevention of the counterfeiting of the article can be achieved.
