    , -SO 2 NR 2 -or -CO-, or, when R is not hydrogen, is -NR 12 COO-, -S-, -SO- or -SO 2 -, wherein R 2 is hydrogen or alkyl, or R 1 and R 2 together form alkylene;
    wherein R 12 is hydrogen or alkyl, and wherein R 22 is hydrogen, cyano or nitro;
    or a salt thereof when appropriate. The compounds possess antioestrogenic activity and may be used for the treatment of hormone-dependent breast tumours or of anovulatory infertility.

    R' is selected from alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl benzyl and substituted benzyl; A is selected from hydrogen, halogen, nitro, alkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio, alkenylthio, alkynylthio, cycloalkoxy, cycloalkylthio, sulfamoyl, N-(C 1 to C 6 alkyl) sulfamoyl, N,N-di(C 1 to C 6 alkyl) sulfamoyl, benzylthio and substituted benzylthio; R 2 is selected from hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, substituted alkyl, acyl, alkylsulfonyl, benzenesulfonyl, substituted benzenesulfonyl, and an inorganic or organic cation; R 3 is selected from alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, substituted alkyl, haloalkenyl and haloalkynyl; and R" is selected from alkyl, fluoroalkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl and phenyl. The compounds are herbicides and in further embodiments the invention provides processes for the preparation of compounds of formula I, intermediates useful in the preparation of compounds of formula I, herbicidal compositions containing as active ingredient a compound of formula I, and processes for severely damaging or killing unwanted plants by applying to the plants or to the growth medium of the plants an effective amount of a compound of formula I.

    摘要: The invention relates to polyprenyl compounds of the general formula


    wherein
    represents a trans-isoprene unit,
    represents a cis-isoprene unit, n is an integer of 11-19, Z' is -CH 2 0H or a functional precursor thereof, and either one of R' and R 2 is a hydrogen atom and the other is -S(O) m R 3 in which m is an integer of 0 (zero), 1 or 2 and R 3 is a phenyl, naphthyl, pyridyl or thiazolinyl group which may optionally have one or more substituents selected from lower alkyl groups and halogen atoms. These polyprenyl compounds can be synthesized by reacting a compound of the general formula

    with a compound of the general formula
    with the aid of an anionizing agent.
    (either one of A and X being a halogen atom and the other being -S(O) m R 3 )
    These polyprenyl compounds can be converted into mammalian dolichols or precursors thereof by reductive elimination of the -S(O) m R 3 group.
