Connected to the base is a centrifuge shell which defines a hollow interior space. A disposable liner is positioned within the centrifuge shell. A hollow rotor hub is assembled to the base and extends through the hollow interior space. A support plate is positioned within the hollow interior space and, in cooperation with the rotor hub, defines an annular flow exit. Positioned within the hollow interior space is a unitary separation vane module 101 which is constructed and arranged so as to extend around the rotor hub. The separation vane module 101 includes a plurality of axially-extending and spaced-apart separation vanes 104. In one embodiment the vane module 101 and a liner shell 103 are formed as a unitary component 102.

A high temperature composite ceramic filter having particular use as a diesel engine exhaust filter. An aqueous slurry containing short ceramic fibers, organic fibers and a water soluble thermoplastic binder is formed into a sheet and dried. The dried sheet is then fabricated into a three-dimensional green filter structure and a binder, either a liquid solution of a thermosetting resin or a colloidal solution of a ceramic material, is applied to the filter structure to increase the temperature stability of the green structure. The filter structure is then fired at an elevated temperature sufficient to remove the organic constituents and is subsequently coated with silicon carbide by a chemical vapor deposition process to provide a composite ceramic filter having high temperature resistance, durability and improved performance.

The present invention relates generally to a fuel filter for use with internal combustion engines, for example, but not limited to diesel engines in commercial vehicles. The fuel filter includes a fuel additive that can be released into fuel. The rate of release for the fuel can be controlled. One embodiment of the fuel filter is illustrated in FIG. 1. The fuel additive (42) is provided in an inner chamber (40) and maintained in fluid communication with the fuel in the filter via an opening restricted by baffle plate(s) 50 and/or a diffusion orifice (44). In alternative embodiments, the opening into the inner chamber can be thermostatically controlled to limit fuel flow to the fuel additive. In alternative forms the fuel additive can be released at a substantially constant rate to maintain a uniform level of fuel additive in the fuel. Use of the present invention provides a fuel filter having an extended life span that is longer than fuel filters typically used with combustion engines.

A coalescing filter for separating oil from a blowby gas stream includes a coalescing filter element (24) designed with a plurality of relatively small flow-through pores which have the potential for creating a high restriction when wetted due to the surface tension which results. In order to reduce the restriction level, the coalescing filter is attached to a rotating component (25), such as a gear, so that rotary motion is imparted to the coalescing filter and centrifugal force is generated across the plurality of flow-through pores. By generating centrifugal force, any oil which might otherwise remain in said pores so as to clog the pores is spun out so that the pores of the coalescing filter element remain in a "dry" condition such that any restriction to continued flow is substantially lower than the restriction level which is present when the pores are wetted.

A replaceable filter cartridge for use in a fluid filter assembly includes a substantially cylindrical filter element including a pair of oppositely disposed filter element ends. A first endplate is bonded to one of the filter element ends so as to close the end and prevent fluid leakage therethrough. A second endplate is bonded to the opposite filter element end so as to close the opposite end and prevent fluid leakage therethrough. The second endplate includes an outer annular wall which is sized so as to create a noticeable distance of separation between the second endplate outer wall and the outer surface of the filter element and thereby define an annular clearance space therebetween. The outer wall of the second endplate is annular and substantially concentric with the filter element and provides a lip or free edge for the snap-on assembly of a closing lid member. By configuring the lid member with a series of snap-over fingers, it is possible to simply snap the lid onto the second endplate and thereafter use the lid for handling and manipulation of the replaceable filter cartridge.

A coolant filter for use in filtering a coolant solution which flows through the coolant filter includes a filter housing assembly which is made up of an outer housing (21) which is crimped to a nutplate (22) which defines an internally threaded flow outlet. A generally cylindrical filter element (23) is positioned inside of the filter housing assembly and a first endplate (24) is bonded to the end of the filter element which is adjacent to the nutplate. An endplate member (46) is provided for attachment to the opposite end of the filter element and is configured in such a way so as to define an interior chamber where supplemental coolant additive pellets are stored. A closing plate (25) is applied across the open end of the interior chamber so as to create an enclosed chamber for the supplemental coolant additive pellets (39). A slow release mechanism is provided for controlling the rate of release of the supplemental coolant additive from the enclosed chamber into the coolant solution. In one embodiment of the present invention, the slow release mechanism includes a diffusion tube (56) which defines a diffusion orifice (57). In another embodiment of the present invention, the slow release mechanism includes a semipermeable (or osmotic) membrane wafer. In both instances, the slow release mechanism is positioned between the source of supplemental coolant additive and the flow outlet in the nutplate.

A self-venting valve apparatus using a valve stem (16) rotatably and slidably mounted to a vessel (4) by a collar (8) is disclosed. The stem includes threads at the top (36) and base (34) of the stem which matingly engage internal threads (10) of the collar to hold the stem open or closed. A single gasket (46) seals the gas inlet and liquid outlet in the closed configuration. To drain the fluid, the valve stem is unscrewed so the bottom threads disengage from the collar, the valve stem lowers until the top threads of the valve stem engage the collar, and the top threads are screwed to the collar to secure the valve in the open position. Fluid begins draining through the central passage (38) of the valve stem (16) before gas enters the vessel through the groove (20) in the sidewall of the valve stem to allow proper siphoning. The lower end of the liquid drain passage is placed below the lower end of the air inlet groove, thereby insuring that the liquid drain passage is opened first as the valve stem is lowered. Entering air is isolated from the outgoing water by a riser wall (44) which separates the passage from the groove. The liquid drains through the passage and then exits into a collector knob. The collector knob maintains a regulated and controlled flow resistance through a drain spout.
