An extended definition television (EDTV) system transmits, receives and displays both EDTV and NTSC signals using a NTSC channel bandwidth. The system produces an EDTV broadcast signal having a picture with a 16:9 aspect ratio and at least one adjacent horizontal border to produce an overall image aspect ratio of 4:3. Picture information is also selectively modulated onto the horizontal border. The EDTV broadcast signal is transmitted in a NTSC format, and a receiving means is provided comprising a display means with a 16:9 aspect ratio, a detector means for determining whether an EDTV or other type of signal is being received, and an expansion means responsive to the detector means to produce an expanded picture for display. When an EDTV signal is received, it is expanded and filtered vertically and is expanded horizontally and the 16:9 picture is displayed on the 16:9 display means. The receiving means derives picture information from both the picture portion and the border portion of the EDTV signal. When an NTSC signal is received, it is displayed on the 16:9 display means with at least one vertical border so that the NTSC picture has a 4:3 aspect ratio. The EDTV signal is also compatible with and may be received and displayed on standard NTSC receivers as a 16:9 picture with at least one horizontal border.

First and second switches (30)(31) are operated alternately by a logic circuit mode control (40) such that the switches operate at the high frequency range and the frequency of current in the load circuit varies as the magnitude of said source voltage (10) varies. The load circuit has an impedance such that the peak amplitude of the load current remains substantially constant despite variations in the magnitude of said source voltage to achieve a desirable crest factor for the load current. A high current limit circuit rapidly turns off the switches when excessively high current begins to flow through the switches. Low voltage is supplied in port from the high frequency current. Normal operation is ensured during start-up, for reduced line voltage and for a semiconductor chip embodiment.

An apparatus, program product and method incorporate into an enhanced programmable core model (42) an embedded debug monitor (52) to provide integrated graphical debugging functionality in the model. The debug monitor (52) supports the performance of one or more debug operations on the programmable core model (42) during simulation thereof. In addition, the debug monitor (52) is configured to receive a debug parameter from a user through a graphical user interface (44), and report a result of the debug operation to a user via the graphical user interface (44). Through the use of a graphical user interface (44), interaction with a user is greatly facilitated. Moreover, by embedding the debug monitor (52) within the programmable core model (42), a completely integrated simulation and debug environment may be provided to a user, with debugging functionality similar to that available to software developers and hardware-based processor designers. As a result, validation of a model's performance can be performed more efficiently and with less effort.

In a preferred embodiment, an etch stop recess portion [220] is provided over the dielectric [210] which encloses the interconnects [206, 208] to prevent via openings [224, 226] from extending into the voids [216] during the etching of the via openings [224, 226]. Accordingly, metal deposition of the voids [216] during metal deposition of the vias [224, 226] is avoided. As a result, the semiconductors so formed have reduced capacitance between the interconnects [206, 208] and improved reliability since the voids [216] are cleared of any metal deposition.

An environmental scanning electron microscope with field emission gun providing a spatial resolution of 2 nm which is comparable to the resolution of high vacuum field emission scanning microscope even though the specimen (66) is contained in the gaseous environment of the specimen chamber (68). The object lens assembly includes four differentially pumped vacuum zones (80, 82, 84, 86) to provide a pressure difference of up to approximately 10 Torr between the field emission gun and the specimen. The differentially pumped aperture system further includes at least four pressure limiting apertures (70, 72, 74, 76) defining the differentially pumped vacuum zones. One of the pressure limiting apertures is formed of a pressure limiting aperture assembly (103) which includes a plurality of stacked annular apertures (108, 110, 112, 114). Further, an electron detection assembly is provided for detecting signals from the surface of the specimen. The electron detection assembly includes a printed circuit board (132) having a signal ring electrode (136) biased to collect secondary electrons from the surface of said specimen and a final pressure limiting aperture (144) integrally formed therewith which extends through said signal ring electrode.
