A reconfigurable multi-media system, method and device provides monitoring and reconfiguration of a plurality of communication layers of a communications stack to dynamically reconfigure the modulation and coding of software defined radio (SDR) .The system includes a software object radio (SWR) library having reconfigurable object specification, design and performance parameters, the SWR is adapted for at least one of transmitting and receiving multi-media content via wireless communication; a controller in communication with the SWR library; a power management device module in communication with said controller; a reconfigurable encoder/decoder in communication with said controller to provide the SWR with dynamic coding information for modulation; a TCP/IP interface in communication with said reconfigurable encoder/decoder and said controller; and an application layer comprising a link layer and a reconfigurable physical layer in communication with each other and said controller, the physical layer adapted for communication with a channel, and the application layer including at least one driver for multimedia delivery. The controller monitors the physical layer and link layer information and the reconfigurable encoder/decoder dynamically reconfigures modulation and coding of multi-media content according to a cross-layer optimization approach.

These custom operations enhance a system, such as PC system (TM-1), to provide real-time multimedia capabilities while maintaining advantages of special-purpose, embedded solution, i.e., low cost and chip count, and advantages of a general-purpose processor reprogrammability. These custom operations work in a computer system (TM-1) which supplies input data having operand data, performs operations on the operand data, and supplies result data a destination register (rdes). Operations performed may include audio and video processing including clipping or saturation operations. The present invention also performs parallel operations on select operand data from input registers (rsrc) and stores results in the destination register (rdes).

A non-intrusive system and method for tuning the speaker (50) is performed by applying a reference signal and a control signal to the input of the programmable speaker (50). A microphone (54) detects a sound corresponding to the input reference signal at the output (53) of the speaker and feeds it back to a tester (55) which analyzes the frequency response of the speaker (50) by comparing the input reference signal to the audible output signal (53) from the speaker (50). Depending on the results of the comparison, the tester provides to the speaker (50) an updated digital control signal with new characterization data which is then stored in the speaker memory (52) and used to again perform transform functions on the input reference signal. The tuning feedback cycle continues until the input reference signal and the audible output signal (53) from the speaker (50) exhibit the desired frequency response as determined by the tester.

The pressure limiting aperture is preferably provided with means for electrically biassing it such that it can act as an electrically biased pressure limiting aperture detector, and it is preferably formed integrally on the printed circuit board (132).
