A method is designed for measuring a magnetic offset of a geomagnetic sensor equipped in a portable information terminal apparatus having a storage. The geomagnetic sensor has a magnetic sensitivity to a geomagnetic field and is affected by magnetization to cause the magnetic offset. In the method, an output of the geomagnetic sensor is measured to successively provide measurement data of the geomagnetic field from the output of the geomagnetic sensor. The measurement data is stored in the storage. The measurement data is read out from the storage when a number of the measurement data stored in the storage reaches a predetermined number, and an offset value of the magnetic offset is estimated based on the predetermined number of the measurement data read out from the storage.

A circuit and method are given, which realizes a stable yet sensitive differential capacitance measuring device with good RF-suppression and with very acceptable noise features for use in capacitive sensor evaluation systems. By evaluating the difference of capacitor values only - with the help of a switched capacitor front-end - large spreads of transducer capacitor values are tolerable. Furthermore a mode of operation can be set up, where no essential galvanic connection between sensor input and the active read-out input at any given time is existing. The solution found exhibits a highly symmetrical construction. Using the intrinsic advantages of that solution the circuit of the invention is manufactured as an integrated circuit with standard CMOS technology at low cost.

Since the capacitance of the variable capacitance unit varies according to the facing area and the facing distance of the one portion of the human body and the opposed electrode, it is possible to detect the one portion of the human body approaching or touching the robot toy by detecting this change. Since the opposed electrode forming the touch sensor can be provided within the casing, the touch sensor cannot be seen directly from the outside of the robot toy.
