The first reading clock in synchronisation with the reproduced signal is generated by a first reading clock generation circuit (9) and is used for reading out discrete information such as computer-use data. In addition, in the case of discrete information, it is possible to start the recording/reproducing operation immediately after an optical head reaches a desired position, thereby permitting a shortened access time.

The object of the invention is to realize large-capacity recording based on the multilayer recording. The magnetooptic recording medium consists of multilayered vertically magnetizing films, capable of storing information even in layers other than the first layer which is closest to a source of light. The layers have higher Curie temperatures, as they are more distant from the source of light. In the magnetooptic reproducing method using the above recording medium, the information stored in a magnetic domain pattern of a layer is transferred to a layer closer to the source of light. To record information in the medium, external magnetic field is applied so that information is written successively from the layer having highest Curie temperature.

This magneto-optic method and apparatus for recording and retrieving high-density digital data employ the selective heating, beyond the Curie or compensation temperature T c of the record material, at individual storage locations of a magnetically ordered record layer (9) in the presence of an external magnetic field for recording information by rotating the direction of polarization at the affected record locations, and the selective detection of the state of rotation of the polarization direction at information storage locations in a recording medium (7) by way of analyzing the state of rotation of the light transmitted through said record material. The writing and retrieval of information are performed by means of a sharply pointed tip (5) placed at an essentially constant distance above the recording medium (7), the sharpness of the apex (6) of said tip (5) determining the resolution and, hence, the achievable storage density. The heating of the storage locations in the record layer (9) is accomplished by means of a laser beam (1, 2) directed onto the recording medium (7) through said slidably arranged tip (5). For detecting the state of rotation of the polarization direction at the individual storage locations, a laser beam (11) travelling inside a wave guide (12) arranged in juxtaposition with said recording medium (7), is coupled into said record layer (9). The light transmitted through the record layer (9) is analyzed by said tip (5) followed by a beam-splitting prism (3) which provides the s- and p-polarized components of the light.

A magneto-optic recording medium and a method of magneto-optic recording are disclosed. The magneto-optic recording medium comprises a multilayered recording film including a magneto-optic recording film (3) having a magnetically anisotropic characteristic in the vertical direction, formed on a transparent substrate (1), and a perpendicular magnetization film (4) formed on the magneto-optic recording film (3) with the coercive force thereof small at room temperature and the Curie point thereof sufficiently high. By use of this magneto-optic recording medium, a magnetic field with the direction thereof reversed in accordance with the level of the desired recording signal is applied to the perpendicular magnetization film (4) thereby to record the desired signal therein. The temperature of the magneto-optic recording film (3) is increased thereby to transfer the magnetization recording in the perpendicular magnetization film (4) to the magneto-optic recording film (3), thus recording the desired recording signal in the magneto-optic recording film (3).

This invention relates to a photomagnetic recording method for writing data into a photomagnetic medium by using a magnetic head whose magnetic field is modulated by a recording signal and an optical pickup. In accordance with the present invention, a first data pit group is first recorded on the photomagnetic recording medium with gaps greater than a predetermined data pit recording gap and then each data pit of a second data pit group is recorded between the adjacent data pits of the first data pit group. A photomagnetic recording apparatus according to the present invention can cope, by interleaving write method, with both the factors of frequency characteristics of the magnetic head and the thermal interference of adjacent pits that limit high density recording or high speed access, and can accomplish both high density recording and high speed access.

A magneto-optical memory medium of a laminar structure comprising at least one non-magnetic layer, and a plurality of magneto-optical storage layers separeted from each other by corresponding one of the at least one non-magnetic layer, and wherein information is read out from a selected one of the storage layers by detecting a change in the Kerr rotation angle of corresponding one of light beams of different wavelengths applied to the memory medium which change depends upon magneto-optical anisotropy of the storage leyers. A thickness of one of the storage layers is determined so that the change in the Kerr rotation angle of each of the light beams represents the anisotropy of the corresponding storage layer, irrespective of the anisotropy of the other storage layers. Also disclosed is a magneto-optical apparatus for writing and/or reading information on or from the desired magneto-optical layers.
